* En primer plano:
Dos mujeres arrodilladas atienden al recién nacido, que está envuelto en pañales. Una de ellas sostiene con delicadeza al bebé mientras otra parece preparar los paños o asistir en el cuidado. A la izquierda se aprecian aguamaniles (jaras de agua) y una palangana en el suelo, elementos clásicos que simbolizan la purificación y el baño del neonato en este tipo de pasajes bíblicos.
* En el plano medio (fondo izquierdo):
Se observa una cama con dosel donde descansa la madre (Santa Ana), convaleciente tras el parto, rodeada y atendida por otras mujeres de la casa y parteras.
* En la parte superior:
Rompiendo las densas nubes bajo el gran cortinaje, se abre una gloria celestial o resplandor de luz divina donde se intuye la silueta de la paloma del Espíritu Santo, bendiciendo el nacimiento.
- El grabado utiliza de manera magistral la técnica del sombreado cruzado para generar profundidad y texturas, especialmente visible en los pliegues de la pesada tela superior y en el contraste de las nubes. La estructura enmarcada dentro de un arco arquitectónico y el uso de un gran telón recogido son recursos puramente barrocos, diseñados para conferirle a la escena una atmósfera teatral, solemne y devocional.
Iconographic Analysis:
* In the foreground:
Two kneeling women tend to the newborn, who is swaddled in nappies. One of them gently holds the baby whilst the other appears to be preparing the cloths or assisting with the care. On the left, ewers (water jugs) and a basin on the floor can be seen, classic elements symbolising the purification and bathing of the newborn in this type of biblical passage.
* In the middle ground (left background):
A four-poster bed can be seen where the mother (Saint Anne) is resting, recovering after childbirth, surrounded and attended to by other women of the household and midwives.
* At the top:
Piercing the thick clouds beneath the great curtain, a heavenly glory or radiance of divine light breaks through, within which one can make out the silhouette of the dove of the Holy Spirit, blessing the birth.
The engraving makes masterful use of cross-hatching to create depth and texture, particularly evident in the folds of the heavy upper fabric and in the contrast of the clouds. The composition framed within an architectural arch and the use of a large drawn-back curtain are purely Baroque devices, designed to lend the scene a theatrical, solemn and devotional atmosphere.
It is an engraving produced for a frontispiece or religious book (such as a missal or a breviary) published in the mid-18th century.
