Enrique II de Lorraine fue un noble francés, arzobispo de Reims de 1629 a 1640, quinto Duque de Guisa entre de 1640 a 1664, principe de Joenville, Conde de Eu entre otros títulos nobiliarios, fue el segundo hijo de Carlos Duque de Guisa y de Enriqueta Catalina de Joyeuse.

Henry II of Lorraine was a French nobleman, Archbishop of Reims from 1629 to 1640, fifth Duke of Guise from 1640 to 1664, Prince of Joenville, Count of Eu, among other noble titles. He was the second son of Charles, Duke of Guise, and Henriette Catherine de Joyeuse.

Retrato de tres cuartos en ovalo de Henri II de Lorraine, V Duque de Guisa (Henry de Lorraine, Dvc de Guise), vistiendo armadura de combate con cuello de encaje (rabat) y banda militar sobre el pecho, peinado con la melena larga ensortijada caracterísitica de la corte francesa de mediados del siglo XVII. El óvalo está rematado superiormente por una filacteria/cinta flotante con borlas y flanqueado inferiormente por un escudo de armas coronado con los blasones de la Casa de Lorena/Guisa.

Esta dirección sitúa la edición de la estampa con total seguridad en el siglo XVII, probablemente en la década de 1650 o inicios de la de 1660, coincidiendo con la última etapa de vida del duque.

Jean Boisseau, active in Paris during the mid-17th century as "illuminator to the king" and publisher of maps, genealogies, and heraldic prints. This address places the print's publication with complete certainty in the 17th century, probably in the 1650s or early 1660s, coinciding with the final years of the duke's life.

Carlos Ix de  fue el IV Rey de Francia de la rama Valois - Angoulema, sucedió a su hermano Francisco II quien murio luego de un año y medio de reinado.

Charles IX of France was the fourth king of France from the Valois-Angoulême branch. He succeeded his brother Francis II, who died after a year and a half on the throne.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY :

Carlos IX aparece representado de tres cuartos, girado hacia la derecha, enmarcado en un marco ovalado decorado con un lazo de cinta en la parte superior, rematado con el número de placa 60 en la parte alta del folio. Viste indumentaria cortesana de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, con un sombrero adornado con plumas y pedrería, y una gorguera de lechuguilla (fraise) blanca. En el pecho luce el collar de una orden caballeresca.

Charles IX is depicted in three-quarter view, turned to the right, framed in an oval frame decorated with a ribbon bow at the top, surmounted by the plaque number 60 at the top of the folio. He wears courtly attire from the second half of the 16th century, with a hat adorned with feathers and precious stones, and a white ruff. On his chest, he wears the collar of a chivalric order.

Se trata de un grabado al burin, característico de la escuela francesa del XVII. El modelado del rostro y las texturas de las telas se consiguen mediante un riguroso entramado de líneas cruzadas y contra-tallas finas. El fondo del óvalo presenta un rayado horizontal denso y regular para resaltar el volumen de la figura.

This is a burin engraving, characteristic of the 17th-century French school. The modeling of the face and the textures of the fabrics are achieved through a rigorous network of cross-hatching and fine counter-carvings. The background of the oval features dense, regular horizontal hatching to emphasize the volume of the figure.
