Anne of Brittany was a sovereign Duchess of Brittany and twice Queen consort of France, standing as one of the most influential and wealthy political figures in Renaissance Europe. She was the daughter and sole surviving heir of Duke Francis II of Brittany. Following her father’s death in 1488, she assumed governance of the duchy amidst intense expansionist pressure from the French monarchy. To safeguard Brittany’s independence, she initially married Maximilian of Austria by proxy in 1490. However, King Charles VIII of France invaded the duchy and compelled her to annul that union, marrying her himself in 1491. Upon the death of Charles VIII—who left no surviving male issue—she married his successor, Louis XII, in 1499. This secured the definitive, albeit legally and autonomously complex, incorporation of the Duchy of Brittany into the French Crown. She was notable for maintaining a cultured and refined court, deeply influenced by the Italian Renaissance; she served as a patron to poets, musicians, and artists, and commissioned the creation of exquisite illuminated manuscripts.
