Juan de Austria was a Spanish military and diplomatic, Governor of the Netherlands (1576 - 1578) and Commander of the Holy League between 1571 and 1573, illegitimate son of Charles I was recognized by Philip II as his stepbrother, in 1579 he quelled the Moorish uprising of the Alpujarras, in 1571 he won the Victory of Lepanto in command of the Holy League, he died on October 1, 1578.

El óvalo está ricamente enmarcado en una gran cartela de estilo manierista adornada con volutas, guirnaldas florales y motivos de grutescos y mascarones tanto en la zona superior como en la inferior.
He is depicted in strict left-facing profile, wearing full ceremonial armor, a period-appropriate ruff, and the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The oval is richly framed by a large Mannerist-style cartouche adorned with scrolls, floral garlands, and grotesque and mascaron motifs in both the upper and lower sections.

There are variants associated with the publisher Hillebrant Jacobsz (or Jacopsen), printed in places like The Hague or Utrecht. In many of the full-page printed editions, the bottom section is often supplemented with explanatory texts or short poems in Dutch or Latin alluding to his life and his premature death from typhus (plague) near Namur.
