Otto Wilhelm von Königsmarck was a prominent count, diplomat, and general of German origin who served several European states—most notably Sweden and the Republic of Venice—with great distinction.

He was born into an influential noble family, the son of the celebrated Swedish Field Marshal Hans Christoff von Königsmarck.

He received a solid academic education, which included studies at the University of Jena and formative travels (the Grand Tour) across the rest of Europe.

He was married to Countess Catharina Charlotta De la Gardie, a member of the Swedish high nobility.

He held significant military and diplomatic posts; he served as ambassador to England and France and fought in Swedish military campaigns during the 17th century.

Between 1679 and 1687, he served as Governor-General of Swedish Pomerania, consolidating his political and territorial power in Northern Europe.
After losing some of his Swedish estates due to political reforms, he took command of the Republic of Venice's land forces in their struggle against the Ottoman Empire (the Great Turkish War). Leading Venetian troops alongside Admiral Francesco Morosini, he achieved major victories, capturing cities such as Patras, Corinth, and Athens in 1687.
During the siege of the fortress of Negroponte (modern-day Chalcis, Greece) in the summer of 1688, a plague epidemic decimated the Venetian troops. Count Königsmarck himself fell gravely ill and died on September 15 of that year. In his honor, the Venetian Signoria commissioned a marble bust to be erected at the city's Arsenal.
