TEODORO DE ALMEYDA (1722-1804)

Teodoro de Almeyda fue un clérigo de la Orden de San Felipe Neri, Filosofo, Escritor y Naturalista Portugués , exiliado en Francia de 1767 a 1778 acusado por el Marques de POmbal de conspirar contra el Rey José I de Portugal influenciado por las ideas de la ilustración Francesa publico diversos tratados de filosofía y Teología, fundo la Real Academia de Ciencias de Lisboa, miembro de la Royal Society de Londres y de la Real Sociedad Vascongada, fue una de las figuras mas importantes de la Ilustración Portuguesa.

MARIANA DE AUSTRIA ( 1634-1696 )

MariaAna de Austria, fue reina Consorte de España como segunda esposa del Rey Felipe IV y Regente del Reino hasta la mayoría de edad de su hijo Carlos II en 1675, las derrotas Españolas en las denominadas guerras de devolución contra la Francia de Luis XIV, la ferviente oposición de Don Juan José de Austria hijo ilegítimo de Felipe IV y la mayoría de edad de su hijo Carlos II propiciaron el destierro y el confinamiento en Toledo de Mariana de Austria que volvió a la corte luego de la muerte de Don Juan acontecida en 1679, falleció en 1696 en Madrid a la edad de 62 años recibiendo sepultura en el Real Monasterio de El Escorial.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY :

Fisonomía e indumentaria:

La reina aparece representada en un busto de tres cuartos girado a la izquierda, inscrito en un óvalo facetado. Viste según la suntuosa moda cortesana de la época, con un amplio escote ribeteado de encaje, un gran broche joyel en el pecho y un collar de perlas de una sola vuelta. Destaca el peinado con el característico volumen lateral rizado rizados ensanchando las sienes, propio del retrato oficial de los Habsburgo que popularizaron pintores de corte como Velázquez, si bien aquí reinterpretado bajo el prisma técnico del grabado francés de mediados del Seiscientos.

Elementos heráldicos y ornamentales:

En las esquinas superiores exteriores al óvalo se aprecian un escudo de armas coronado a la izquierda (con las particiones heráldicas simplificadas de la monarquía hispánica y la Casa de Austria) y una corona de laurel a la derecha. Tras el retrato destaca el habitual drapeado o cortinaje oscuro texturizado que dota de profundidad al óvalo y recorta la silueta de la reina.

Physiognomy and attire:

The queen is depicted in a three-quarter bust turned to the left, inscribed within a faceted oval. She is dressed in the sumptuous courtly fashion of the period, with a wide neckline trimmed in lace, a large jeweled brooch on her chest, and a single-strand pearl necklace. Her hairstyle stands out, featuring the characteristic side-curled volume that widens the temples, typical of official Habsburg portraits popularized by court painters such as Velázquez, although here reinterpreted through the technical lens of mid-17th-century French engraving.

Heraldic and ornamental elements:

In the upper outer corners of the oval, a crowned coat of arms is visible on the left (with the simplified heraldic divisions of the Spanish Monarchy and the House of Austria), and a laurel wreath on the right. Behind the portrait stands out the usual textured dark drapery or curtain that gives depth to the oval and outlines the silhouette of the queen.

Antonio Escobar y Mendoza, Teólogo, Clérigo Jesuita, Escritor, Moralista y Confesor Particular del Duque de Osuna.

Miembro de una familia Hidalga Castellana, fue un destacado Escritor y Moralista Jesuita, mantuvo diversas controversias doctrinales con destacados Jansenistas , sus obras tuvieron gran difusión y merecieron numerosas ediciones en la España del siglo XVII.

Antonio Escobar y Mendoza, Theologian, Jesuit Clergyman, Writer, Moralist and Private Confessor of the Duke of Osuna.

Member of a Castilian noble family, he was an outstanding Jesuit writer and moralist, he maintained diverse doctrinal controversies with outstanding Jansenists, his works had great diffusion and deserved numerous editions in the Spain of the XVII century

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY

El retratado se sitúa dentro de un nicho abovedado con tracería geométrica en las enjutas. Este recurso eleva la figura del eclesiástico, dándole una monumentalidad similar a la de una escultura clásica o un relieve devoto, simulando que la imagen cobra relieve tridimensional sobre el plano del papel.

Viste la sotana oscura y el característico bonete de cuatro crestas (biretta), la indumentaria formal reglamentaria que subraya de manera inmediata su condición de sacerdote y, específicamente, su pertenencia a la Compañía de Jesús.

El pergamino o cartela enrollada sobre la que descansa el busto porta la inscripción "Le vray portrait du R. Pere Antoine Escobar Theologien de la Compagnie de Jesus". Funciona como un elemento legitimador y documental, destinado a certificar la autenticidad fisonómica del personaje retratado ante el público.

The subject is positioned within a vaulted niche featuring geometric tracery in the spandrels. This device elevates the figure of the cleric, lending him a monumentality akin to that of a classical sculpture or a devotional relief, creating the illusion that the image projects in three dimensions from the surface of the paper. He wears a dark cassock and the characteristic four-ridged cap (*biretta*)—the prescribed formal attire that immediately underscores his status as a priest and, specifically, his membership in the Society of Jesus. The parchment—or rolled cartouche—upon which the bust rests bears the inscription "Le vray portrait du R. Pere Antoine Escobar Theologien de la Compagnie de Jesus." It serves as a legitimizing, documentary element intended to attest to the sitter's authentic likeness before the public.

Talla dulce . El rostro y las texturas del ropaje eclesiástico y el bonete (biretta) denotan una mano experta en el modelado mediante tramas cruzadas y líneas concéntricas. El fondo del nicho recurre a un trabajo de líneas horizontales densas para hacer resaltar el perfil del retratado.

He carving is exquisite. The face and the textures of the ecclesiastical vestments and biretta demonstrate expert modeling skills through cross-hatching and concentric lines. The background of the niche employs dense horizontal lines to highlight the profile of the sitter.
