ESCENA CABALLERESCA II

This image shows a woodcut (engraving) in the classic style, characteristic of illustrations for printed books from the late 15th or early 16th century (incunabula or post-incunabula). The style, with its thick lines, direct cuts, and simplified parallel shading, is very typical of the printing presses of the period that illustrated historical chronicles, chivalric romances, or biblical narratives.

The engraving depicts a vivid scene of a military campaign or siege. Three main planes are clearly distinguishable:
The military encampment (Foreground, left): Three conical tents or military pavilions are shown in detail, topped with knobs or spheres at the apex and decorated with vertical bands.
The fall of the city/fortress (Background, left): A fortress or city wall is under attack or has been conquered. Large columns of dense smoke and stylized flames emerge from the buildings, a common visual device at the time to denote the destruction or sacking of a stronghold.
The cavalry and combat (Right flank): A group of armed soldiers and armored knights advances toward the scene. A rider stands out in the foreground, his horse facing the flames. In the lower right, a fallen warrior (or a subdued prisoner) is visible, reinforcing the drama of the victory or assault.

OBSERVACIONES / OBSERVATION:

Given its almost square shape and the simple border that defines it, this wooden block was probably carved to illustrate a chapter in a printed book. At that time (15th-16th centuries), it was extremely common for printers to reuse the same engraving in different parts of a book—and even in entirely different works—to depict any battle, siege, or destruction of a city, regardless of the exact historical accuracy of the passage.

 ESCENA CABALLERRESCA

A chivalric scene depicting a defeated knight being approached by his companions or enemies. Its stylized approach faithfully reproduces the typical illustrations of early editions of chivalric romances or Spanish epic poems.

_________________

The image depicts a dramatic narrative scene, likely from classical history, biblical text, or a chivalric romance:

The Fallen Warrior: On the left, a man in detailed armor and a prominent helmet/headpiece lies on the ground, leaning against a tree or rock. His sword lies discarded in the foreground. He appears wounded, dying, or perhaps blinded/stunned.

The Mounted Figures: In the center and right, figures on horseback approach him. One horse is prominently seen from the front/side.

Potential Themes: * The Conversion of Saint Paul: A very common artistic motif of this era featuring a soldier fallen from his horse, stunned by a heavenly light (though usually the horse is also fallen or startled).

The stylized, somewhat rustic cutting style, the cross-hatching patterns, and the specific armor and helmet details strongly point to the 16th century (likely mid-to-late 1500s). It looks like a book illustration, common in early printed Spanish or European literature (like chivalric romances or chronicles).

 ESCENA CABALLERESCA.

This looks like a fascinating early European woodcut, likely from an incunabulum (a book printed before 1501) or a very early 16th-century printed chronicle or romance.

Key Visual Elements
The Central Action: A knight on horseback is striking down or threatening a figure on the ground with his sword. The figure on the ground appears to have long hair and is dressed in robes, kneeling or collapsing in a posture of submission or defeat.

The Retinue/Army: Behind the central knight, there are other mounted figures. Two of them carry tall banners or standards featuring an eagle (specifically resembling a stylized single-headed heraldic eagle), which strongly suggests an imperial, royal, or specific noble allegiance—often associated with the Holy Roman Empire, German states, or specific medieval kingdoms.

You can see Gothic/Blackletter typography bleeding through from the reverse side of the page (recto/verso). Words like "diceres" or similar Latin/Old Romance fragments are faintly visible in reverse, which confirms this is a leaf from an early printed book.
