JEAN - JACQUES ROUSSEAU
18th century engraving

JEAN- JACQUES ROUSSEAU  ( 1712 - 1778 )

Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a Swiss polymath who spoke French. He was a writer, educator, philosopher, musician, botanist, and naturalist. Although he was often described as an Enlightenment thinker, he exhibited profound contradictions that separated him from the leading figures of the Enlightenment, earning him, for example, the fierce enmity of Voltaire and being considered one of the first writers of the pre-Romantic movement. He befriended Denis Diderot and contributed articles on music to the iconic Encyclopédie

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY
Origen:

Adapting the "Citizen" Image:
La Tour's original portrait established the definitive visual archetype of Rousseau as a refined yet modest citoyen de Genève—smiling gently, approachable, and wearing a simple dark coat rather than extravagant aristocratic robes.

The Medallion (Tondo/Oval):
The oval frame surrounding the bust draws on classical numismatic traditions (coins and medals), conferring historical stature, authority, and permanence to the sitter.

Trompe-l'œil Brick Background:
The textured brickwork backdrop surrounding the oval medallion provides an architectural enclosure. This geometric pattern serves to visually push the portrait forward into the viewer's space while contrasting the organic, soft rendering of the figure.

The Tablet (Cartouche):
Set in an elongated architectural plinth below, the frame anchors the portrait in the visual language of classical funerary monuments, statues, and formal book frontispieces.

DON JUAN JOSÉ DE AUSTRIA. Grabado del Siglo XVII

DON JUAN JOSÉ DE AUSTRIA
17th Century engraving

John of Austria was a Spanish politician and military leader, the illegitimate son of King Philip IV and the actress María Calderón, known as "La Calderona."

He served in Philip IV's administration due to his military and diplomatic skills. He regained control of Sicily, Naples, and Catalonia for Spain, although in the Netherlands he failed to advance beyond some initial victories against the French and English, relying on an increasingly exhausted army and making hasty decisions. He also failed to reconquer Portugal, which was by then beyond the reach of the crown.

After the end of the major conflicts, he returned to court and rose in opposition to the regent queen Mariana of Austria, whom he eventually succeeded in replacing as head of the empire. John of Austria worked to secure the reign of his half-brother Charles II against the ambitions of Louis XIV of France.
