AMBROSE PHILIPS. Grabado del Siglo XVIII

AMBROSE PHILIPS
17th Century engraving

AMBROSE PHILIPS  ( 1674 - 1749 )

Ambrose Philips was an English Whig poet, playwright, and politician. Although he held several public offices, he is primarily remembered for his involvement in the literary disputes of the 18th century.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY:
Busto neoclásico (All'antica):

Neoclassical Bust (All'antica):
Philips is presented in pure profile, devoid of modern 18th-century attire, wigs, or cravats. The short, natural hair (resembling a Roman crop) and simple toga-like drapery secured with a circular fibula (brooch) deliberately evoke the iconography of classical Roman statesmen and poets. This framing elevated contemporary literary figures to the status of timeless ancient authorities.

Laurel Garland:
The oval medallion frame is crowned by a woven laurel wreath (laurus nobilis), the classical symbol of poetic achievement, academic distinction, and immortality derived from Apollo.

Classical Inscription & Horatian Virtues:
The Latin motto beneath the portrait—Incorrupta fides / Nudaque veritas—is drawn directly from Horace’s Odes (Book 1, Ode 24, written on the death of Quintilius Varus).

Incorrupta fides ("Uncorrupted faith/loyalty") highlights personal integrity and political alignment (referencing his Whig ties and public service).

Nudaque veritas ("Naked truth") mirrors both his plain, unadorned profile in the portrait and his commitment to literary clarity, serving as a defense against the satirical attacks of contemporaries like Alexander Pope.

.

Primary Medium:
Mixed intaglio process combining etching and burin engraving on handmade laid paper.

Plate Preparation & Etching:
The overall composition—including the structural architectural background, the preliminary outlines of the medallion, and the broad tones of the drapery—was initially bitten into the copper plate using etching acid.

Flesh Tones & Contour:
The profile facial structure relies on precise, micro-fine parallel hatching with minimal cross-hatching to model the smooth skin, jawline, and nose while maintaining high highlights.

Shadows & Background:
The background cavity behind the profile features dense, perpendicular cross-hatching to build deep tonal contrast, throwing the silhouette forward.

Ashlar Wall Surround:
The masonry pedestal and outer surround use horizontal line ruling crossed by short, staggered vertical strokes to simulate carved stone texture.
