En el centro de la escena, un personaje sentado en una silla (representación de Hermann Reichenau ) sostiene un papel que dice
EX VOTO. Al frente, un ángel con grandes alas sostiene una paleta de pintor y trabaja sobre un caballete, retratando a una figura vestida a la usanza de la época del grabado.Al fondo, presidiendo el taller o scriptorium, se observa un cuadro de la Virgen con el niño, esto hace alusión directa a la tradición mariana de Hermann, a quien históricamente se le atribuyen célebres himnos como el Salve Regina o el Alma Redemptoris Mater.
En el plano inferior izquierdo aparece una figura de proporciones deformes o místicas (un enano o criatura grotesca apoyada en un bastón) junto a un perro de cinco patas, estas figuras personifican la "monstruosidad" o debilidad de la carne frente a la luz del saber.
En la parte superior, un gran escudo ovalado sostenido por figuras celestiales muestra un ave fénix o un águila remontando el vuelo hacia el sol bajo filacterias barrocas con divisas latinas (como Quoniam dissimilis...), simbolizando cómo el alma y la sabiduría se elevan por encima de las limitaciones físicas terrenales.
Interpretation of the engraving:
At the centre of the scene, a figure seated on a chair (depicting Hermann Reichenau) holds a piece of paper bearing the words ‘EX VOTO’. In front of him, an angel with large wings holds a painter’s palette and works at an easel, painting a portrait of a figure dressed in the fashion of the period in which the engraving was made.
In the background, presiding over the workshop or scriptorium, there is a painting of the Virgin and Child; this is a direct reference to Hermann’s Marian tradition, as he is historically credited with famous hymns such as the *Salve Regina* and the *Alma Redemptoris Mater*.
In the lower left-hand corner, there is a figure of distorted or mystical proportions (a dwarf or grotesque creature leaning on a staff) alongside a five-legged dog; these figures personify the ‘monstrosity’ or weakness of the flesh in the face of the light of knowledge.
At the top, a large oval shield supported by celestial figures depicts a phoenix or an eagle soaring towards the sun beneath Baroque scrolls bearing Latin mottos (such as *Quoniam dissimilis...*), symbolising how the soul and wisdom rise above earthly physical limitations.
