Johannes Frenkel was a poet, scholar, humanist, and clergyman active in Saxony and the surrounding region during the 17th century; he composed the Latin distichs at the bottom, structured as a literary anagrammatic wordplay based on the honoree's name (Christianus Lorenz) and linking his virtue to the symbols in the frame: the laurel, the eagle, and the celestial lyre.
