The Oval Border & Laurel Ribbon:
Framing the figure within an oval (tondo) conveys a sense of classical dignity and permanence, a standard visual trope for elite portraiture in early-to-mid 17th-century Europe. The ornate, flowing ribbon draped across the top emphasizes honor and prestige.
Plate Armor:
The polished plate armor signifies high military rank, command, and martial virtue (virtus). It highlights his leadership in royal campaigns and his status as a key military authority under King Louis XIII.
Lace Falling Collar (Rabat):
The intricate, delicate lace collar provides a stark contrast to the rigid metal armor. Visually, it balances military toughness with refined aristocratic status, courtly sophistication, and wealth.
The Sash (Echarpe):
Worn across the breastplate, the sash indicates officer rank and allegiance to the French Crown, reinforcing his place within the high military command structure.
Coat of Arms & Coronet:
Situated centrally at the base of the frame, the heraldic shield (featuring a chevron) surmounted by a noble coronet directly links the image to his lineage, hereditary nobility, and family title (Marquis d'Effiat). Its position overlapping the frame serves as a visual bridge between the portrait above and the biographical text below.

EDITOR / PUBLISHED
The plate lacks a distinctive signature, either carved or inscribed, that would attribute the image to a specific master engraver (such as Balthazar Moncornet, Michel Lasne, or Gilles Rousselet, who frequently engraved similar court portraits of the period).
The systematic shading of lines and dots and the standardized oval of the portrait indicate a professional French workshop production, intended for series of biographical engravings or for the commercial sale of portraits during the reign of Louis XIV.
MEDIDAS / MEASURES :

The inclusion of the substantial text block below the portrait reveals another common practice of the era. The plate would be structured into two sections: the engraved portrait and a space (sometimes separate, sometimes the same plate) for the letterpress or etched text block.
This allowed the portrait image to be reused in different publications, such as biographical histories or a standalone print, by simply updating or swapping out the lower text section. The text below the portrait in this case is extensive and detailed, suggesting it was created to accompany a published biography or to sell a dedicated profile of the subject.
