Iohannes Van Balen fue un pintor flamenco conocido por sus pinturas barrocas de temas alegoricos e históricos, su padre Hendrick van Balen (1573 - 1632 ) desempeño un papel importante en la renovación de la escuela flamenca de principios del siglo XVII, también fue uno de los maestros de Anthony Van Dick .
Iohannes se formó con su padre, se registro en el gremio de San Lucas como aprendiz en 1631 y como maestro entre 1639 y 1640 .
Con motivo de la entrada triunfal (Pompa Introitus) del nuevo gobernador de los Países Bajos españoles, el cardenal infante Don Fernando, en Amberes en 1635, Iohannes van Balen colaboró con su hermano Gaspard, Theodoor van Thulden, Jan de Labare y Erasmus Quellinus el Joven en la ejecución de los diseños para la galería del Meir y el arco triunfal de la iglesia de San Juan . El diseño general de las decoraciones estuvo bajo la dirección de Rubens.
Iohannes van Balen partió el 8 de septiembre de 1639 con su hermano Gaspard hacia Italia, los dos hermanos trabajaron en Roma, donde Gaspard falleció el 7 de marzo de 1641.
Iohannes regresó a Amberes, donde se casó con Joanna van Weerden el 31 de mayo de 1642. Poco después del nacimiento de su único hijo, Peter, su esposa falleció el 6 de abril de 1643.
Iohannes van Balen murió en Amberes en 1654. Fue enterrado en la iglesia de San Jaime.

Iohannes van Balen was a Flemish painter known for his Baroque paintings of allegorical and historical subjects. His father, Hendrick van Balen (1573–1632), played a significant role in the renewal of the Flemish school in the early 17th century and was also one of Anthony van Dyck's teachers.
Iohannes trained under his father, registering with the Guild of Saint Luke as an apprentice in 1631 and as a master between 1639 and 1640.
For the triumphal entry (Pompa Introitus) of the new governor of the Spanish Netherlands, Cardinal-Infante Don Fernando, into Antwerp in 1635, Iohannes van Balen collaborated with his brother Gaspard, Theodoor van Thulden, Jan de Labare, and Erasmus Quellinus the Younger on the designs for the Meir Gallery and the triumphal arch of St. John's Church in Antwerp. The overall design of the decorations was under the direction of Rubens.
Iohannes van Balen departed on September 8, 1639, with his brother Gaspard on a trip to Italy. The two brothers worked in Rome, where Gaspard died on March 7, 1641. Iohannes returned to Antwerp, where he married Joanna van Weerden on May 31, 1642. Shortly after the birth of their only child, Peeter, his wife died on April 6, 1643.
Jan van Balen died in Antwerp in 1654. He was buried in St. James' Church.

La estampa muestra una espléndida calidad en el entramado de las líneas del fondo y en la volumetría del ropaje, tan característica del virtuosismo técnico de Hollar. Se aprecian de forma muy clara las marcas de agua o texto tipográfico del reverso transparentándose levemente en el papel, lo que suele ser habitual en hojas de texto o pruebas impresas en papeles de la época. Un reverso con texto impreso en tipografía móvil frecuentemente delata que la estampa perteneció a una de las ediciones encuadernadas de las biografías de artistas.
The print displays superb quality in the interlacing of the background lines and the volume of the drapery, so characteristic of Hollar's technical virtuosity. The watermarks or typographic text on the reverse are clearly visible, showing slightly through the paper, which is common in text sheets or proofs printed on papers of the period. A reverse with text printed in movable type often indicates that the print belonged to one of the bound editions of artists' biographies.
