MONSIEUR LE MARQUIS DE LA MOVSSAYE ( ?- 1650 )

François de Gouyon (o Goyon), marqués de La Moussaye (fallecido en Stenay en noviembre de 1650), un destacado militar bretón que sirvió como mariscal de campo en los ejércitos reales franceses y desempeñó un papel relevante como estrecho colaborador y ayudante de campo del Gran Condé (Monseigneur le Prince) durante los turbulentos años de la Fronda.

François de Gouyon (or Goyon), Marquis de La Moussaye (died in Stenay in November 1650), a prominent Breton military officer who served as a field marshal in the French royal armies and played a significant role as a close collaborator and aide-de-camp to the Grand Condé (Monseigneur le Prince) during the turbulent years of the Fronde.

El presente grabado es un excelente testimonio de la retratística militar de la Francia de Luis XIV durante la Regencia de Ana de Austria, y un elemento recurrente en los repertorios icónicos regionales de la nobleza bretona (habitualmente catalogado en repertorios de iconografía histórica francesa e internacional, como los fondos del British Museum bajo referencias analógicas de la producción de Moncornet).

The present engraving is an excellent testimony of the military portraiture of France under Louis XIV during the Regency of Anne of Austria, and a recurring element in the regional iconic repertoires of the Breton nobility (usually cataloged in repertoires of French and international historical iconography, such as the British Museum collections under analogous references to the production of Moncornet).

Louis de Lorraine, Duque de Joyeuse y de Angulema y conde de Eu y principe de Joinville fue un noble francés hijo de Carlos de Lorena Duque de Guisa y de Enriqueta Catalina de Joyeuse, en 1647 fue nombrado Gran Camarlengo de Francia.

Louis de Lorraine, Duke of Joyeuse and Angoulême, Count of Eu and Prince of Joinville, was a French nobleman, son of Charles de Lorraine, Duke of Guise, and Henriette Catherine de Joyeuse. In 1647, he was appointed Grand Chamberlain of France.

El Retrato :

Louis de Lorraine es representado en un busto de tres cuartos vuelto hacia la derecha, inscrito en un severo marco ovalado decorado en su parte superior por una cinta o filacteria flotante en zigzag con pliegues geométricos bien definidos.

El personaje luce la característica gran peluca rizada del periodo, bigote fino y perilla (mouche).

Viste media armadura de campaña, sobre la que destaca la elaborada valona o cuello de encaje plano (collet), rematada con la cruz de la Orden del Santo Espíritu (u Orden de Malta, conforme a su rango) pendiente al pecho.

La técnica de Frosne muestra un dominio riguroso del buril, estructurando los volúmenes del rostro mediante finos trazos cruzados (contre-tailles) y resolviendo el brillo metálico de la coraza con un fuerte contraste de claroscuro.

The Portrait :

Louis de Lorraine is depicted in a three-quarter bust facing right, set within a severe oval frame decorated at the top with a floating zigzag ribbon or scroll with well-defined geometric folds. The figure sports the characteristic large, curly wig of the period, a thin mustache, and a goatee. He wears half-armor of field armor, over which stands out the elaborate ruff or flat lace collar, topped with the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit (or Order of Malta, according to his rank) hanging on his chest.

Frosne's technique demonstrates a rigorous mastery of the burin, structuring the volumes of the face with fine cross-hatching and resolving the metallic sheen of the armor with a strong chiaroscuro contrast.

En la zona inferior, interrumpiendo el marco y el texto, se sitúa el escudo de armas del Duque de Joyeuse, timbrado con la corona ducal correspondiente a los pares de Francia.

El extenso texto calcográfico inferior, dispuesto en dos bloques flanqueando el blasón, constituye una detallada biografía que elogia su linaje y hazañas militares mencionando sus títulos de Conde de Eu y de Ponthieu, su cargo de Coronel General de la Caballería Ligera, así como su intervención en los sitios de Gravelinas, Cortrai y el socorro de Arrás, donde recibió las heridas que le provocaron la muerte el 27 de septiembre de 1654, a los 32 años de edad.

At the bottom, interrupting the frame and the text, is the coat of arms of the Duke of Joyeuse, surmounted by the ducal crown of the Peers of France.

The extensive intaglio text below, arranged in two blocks flanking the blazon, is a detailed biography that praises his lineage and military exploits, mentioning his titles of Count of Eu and of Ponthieu, his position as Colonel General of the Light Cavalry, as well as his participation in the sieges of Gravelines and Cortrai, and the relief of Arras, where he received the wounds that caused his death on September 27, 1654, at the age of 32.

El cardenal aparece representado de busto, girado tres cuartos hacia la derecha pero dirigiendo la mirada fijamente al espectador. Viste la indumentaria cardenalicia propia: la mozzetta (capelina) abotonada al frente y la birreta de tres picos sobre la cabeza, con el cuello vuelto blanco (collet).

• Heráldica:

• En la base del pedestal, interrumpiendo el dístico latino, se sitúa su escudo de armas en un óvalo enmarcado por volutas y rematado por el sombrero cardenalicio (capelo) con sus cordones y borlas característicos. Las armas muestran un ave (un ave fénix o una paloma) sobre una rama, motivo iconográfico recurrente en su heráldica personal.

The cardinal is depicted in bust form, turned three-quarters to the right but looking directly at the viewer. He wears the cardinal's attire: the mozzetta (capelet) buttoned at the front and the three-cornered biretta on his head, with a turned-down white collar.

At the base of the pedestal, interrupting the Latin couplet, is his coat of arms in an oval framed by volutes and surmounted by a cardinal's hat (capel) with its characteristic cords and tassels. The arms depict a bird (a phoenix or a dove) on a branch, a recurring iconographic motif in his personal heraldry.
