Este tipo de retrato —con el formato característico de un busto inscrito en un óvalo de piedra (ovale équarri) que descansa sobre un pedestal o repisa tipográfica— pertenece a las célebres colecciones iconográficas publicadas en París por el librero y editor Michel Odieuvre a mediados del siglo XVIII (como la famosa serie Portraits des personnes illustres). Odieuvre contrató a los mejores grabadores de su tiempo, entre ellos a Gaillard, para unificar visualmente los retratos de monarcas, nobles y eruditos europeos.
This type of portrait—with the characteristic format of a bust inscribed within a stone oval (ovale équarri) resting on a pedestal or typographic shelf—belongs to the celebrated iconographic collections published in Paris by the bookseller and publisher Michel Odieuvre in the mid-18th century (such as the famous series Portraits des personnes illustres).
