17th Century engraving
JESÚS CORONADO DE ESPINAS / JESUS CROWNED WITH THORNS
The composition places the suffering Jesus Christ in the center, seated and bound, surrounded by his executioners in an attitude of mockery and torment. A Roman soldier in the foreground on the left, dressed in classical armor, holds a halberd or spear, while in the background additional figures observe the scene beneath an architectural setting with a distinct classical and Renaissance influence.

OBSERVACIONES / OBSERVATION:
_________________________________
The key element lies in the spectacular Mannerist/early Baroque-style border or frame surrounding the scene. This type of border, profusely decorated with vegetal motifs, scrolls, cornucopias, and symmetrical designs, is an unmistakable indication that the print was intended for a large-scale publication.
The formal typology of this frame points to two possible cataloging origins common during this period:
Illustration for a missal or liturgical book:
Prints of this size and with this level of sacred framing often opened major sections (such as the Liturgy of the Passion) in large volumes printed in printing centers like Antwerp, Lyon, or Venice.
Frontispiece or section page of an illustrated chronicle or Bible:
Often, the plates of the central scene were engraved independently and inserted within a common woodcut or intaglio ornamental border that served as a structural template to maintain the aesthetic cohesion of the volume.
