Claude de Berlaymont, Gobernador de Charleville, Señor de Haultpenne,Comandante de los Ejercitos Imperiales Españoles, miembro del consejo de estado de las Diecisiete Provincias, gozo de la confianza del Duque de Parma Alejandro Farnesio ( 1545 - 1592), participo y dirigió el sitio de Breda, reconquisto las ciudades de Lier, Eindhoven, Nygmegeni y Guelders, participo en la guerra de Colonia (1583 - 1588 ), en un enfrentamiento con el ejercito de Felipe de Hohenlohe Claude de Berlaymont fue herido de muerte, falleció el 14 de julio de 1587 sin descendencia.
Claude de reconquered the cities of Lier, Eindhoven, Nygmegeni and Guelders, participated in the war of Cologne (1583 - 1588), in a confrontation with the army of Philip of Hohenlohe Claude de Berlaymont was mortally wounded, died on July 14, 1587 without descendants.

Se le representa con la típica indumentaria militar de finales del siglo XVI: media armadura de placas o arnés grabado, y una gran gorguera o cuello de lechuguilla almidonado característico de la moda cortesana y militar flamenca de los años 1580.
Fue una figura muy destacada en la toma de Breda (1581) —episodio conocido en la historiografía flamenca como la "Furia de Haultepenne"— y en la toma de Amberes y de Geldern. La leyenda inferior alude a su última campaña militar en el campamento fortificado de Engelen (1587), donde recibió una herida mortal de arcabuz.

He is depicted wearing typical military attire from the late 16th century: half plate armor or engraved harness, and a large ruff or starched collar characteristic of Flemish courtly and military fashion of the 1580s.
He was a prominent figure in the capture of Breda (1581)—an episode known in Flemish historiography as the "Fury of Haultepenne"—and in the capture of Antwerp and Geldern. The inscription below refers to his last military campaign at the fortified camp of Engelen (1587), where he received a fatal arquebus wound.

Este tipo de retratos en óvalos seriados con cartela latina en tipografía romana monumental solían formar parte de las influyentes crónicas ilustradas de principios del siglo XVII dedicadas a las guerras de religión de los Países Bajos, muy frecuentemente de las obras del historiador protestante Willem Baudartius (como su célebre Polemo-graphia Auraico-Belgica, publicada en las décadas de 1610 y 1620) o de los repertorios grabados por los talleres de Frans Hogenberg o Michiel Colijn.
These types of serial oval portraits with Latin cartouches in monumental Roman typefaces were often part of the influential illustrated chronicles of the early 17th century dedicated to the religious wars of the Netherlands, very frequently from the works of the Protestant historian Willem Baudartius (such as his famous Polemo-graphia Auraico-Belgica, published in the 1610s and 1620s) or from the engraved repertoires by the workshops of Frans Hogenberg or Michiel Colijn.
