Pedro II of Portugal, nicknamed "the Pacific," served as prince regent starting in 1683 and subsequently became King of Portugal and the Algarves. He was the seventh child of King John IV—founder of the House of Braganza following the restoration of Portuguese independence—and Queen Luisa de Guzmán. His older brother, King Afonso VI, was deemed unfit to rule due to physical and mental health issues. In 1667, Pedro led a conspiracy to depose him, resulting in Afonso’s exile to the Azores, while Pedro assumed governance as Prince Regent. Following the death of Afonso VI in 1683, Pedro formally ascended the throne as an absolute monarch. In an unusual political and dynastic move, after ousting his brother, Pedro married his brother’s wife—Queen Maria Francisca of Savoy-Nemours—having first obtained a papal dispensation. After her death, he married for a second time to Maria Sophia of Neuburg, with whom he had the future King John V.

Dom Pedro is depicted in a three-quarter bust portrait, wearing intricately engraved military armor—typical of a nobleman or commander from the Baroque period—complemented by a lace cravat or neckerchief. The figure is enclosed within a simple oval frame that simulates carved molding, topped by a large, flowing fabric bow with tassels at its ends. At the bottom center of the frame lies the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves, surmounted by the royal crown and flanked by floral or ornamental motifs. Flanking the heraldic shield, and arranged in two columns, is an extensive inscription in French detailing his genealogy, historical context, his succession to his brother Afonso VI, his marriage to Maria Francisca of Savoy—following a dispensation from Pope Clement IX—as well as the attribution to the Parisian publishers and printers.
