Gustaf Otto Stenbock was a Swedish military officer and politician who quickly distinguished himself during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), serving under such prominent marshals as Lennart Torstensson and Carl Gustaf Wrangel. He was appointed major general in 1643, a member of the Privy Council in 1651, and elevated by Queen Christina of Sweden to the rank of Count of Bogesund and Baron of Kronobäck and Öresten in 1652. He became a field marshal in 1656, governor-general of Scania, Halland, and Blekinge in 1658, admiral of the Kingdom in 1664, and chancellor of Lund University in 1666. In 1675, the Swedish fleet under his direct command suffered significant strategic setbacks in the Baltic Sea. King Charles XI dismissed him from his post as Grand Admiral and imposed an official investigation. Charles XI implemented a policy whereby the Crown recovered much of the land granted to the high nobility. As a result, Stenbock lost most of his personal fortune, castles, and estates. He died on September 24, 1685, in Stockholm, practically penniless but retaining the respect due to his past service to the Crown.

    TITULO / TITLE :
    Gustaf Otto Stenbock

    AUTOR / AUTHOR:

In the portraits of international dignitaries from Pitau's workshop and the French court, the print was usually based on a previous oil painting made by a court painter (such as Philippe de Champaigne or Claude Lefèbvre) or on a ceremonial drawing sent from Sweden with the effigy and official titles of the person.

    GRABADOR / ENGRAVER :

Nicolas Pitau was one of the most outstanding burin engravers of the Franco-Flemish school of the 17th century, famous for his technical mastery in the reproduction of portraits of rulers, nobles and ecclesiastics of the Baroque era.
    MEDIDAS / MEASURES :
    30 x 20 cm

    __________________________

Intaglio (Buril on Copper): Direct intaglio engraving using a burin (a beveled steel cutting tool) on a copper plate.

Line Depth: The variation in thickness and depth of the hand-drawn grooves allows for different amounts of ink to be retained, generating a tonal range that goes from the clean whites of the paper to the deep blacks of the background.

Crosshatching (Taille e Contre-taille): To create the volumes of the face and the shading of the flesh tones, Pitau uses a network of extremely fine crosshatching lines that mimic the soft transition of light (Baroque sfumato).
    Texture Rendering:
Armor Metal: Continuous, firm, and highly parallel lines, accompanied by areas of direct white to simulate the shine of burnished steel.

Textiles and Fabrics: Wavy, dense strokes in the clothing and on the lower cushion recreate the weight and drape of velvet and silks.
Fur and Tassels: Loose, curved engraving that lends a natural quality to the mane and the decorations on the staff of office.

    MATERIAL:

    _______________________________

Handcrafted between the 16th and 19th centuries from shredded linen and cotton rags soaked in water (without wood pulp or acidic components).
Structure visible when held up to the light: It shows the marks of the coir and the metal wires (the framework of the papermaking machine or form).
Properties: It is a highly durable, flexible, and moisture-resistant paper, essential for withstanding the high pressure of the printing press.

    ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY :
    * Retrato:

    * Portrait:
The medallion portrait depicts Marie Adélaïde of Savoy (1685–1712), Duchesse of Burgundy, wife of Louis of France (Duke of Burgundy and Dauphin) and mother of the future King Louis XV.

The duchess's effigy appears within an oval frame surmounted by the ducal crown (with fleurons and diadems), held aloft amidst clouds by four putti, or Baroque cherubs. The treatment of her hair in a high, voluminous style (coiffure à la Fontange) and the neckline, typical of the Versailles court fashion of around 1700–1710, are characteristic of the period when Marie Adélaïde revitalized the court of the aging Louis XIV.

    CONTEXTO / CONTEXT

During the Ancien Régime in France, Holy Week Office books were not only indispensable devotional texts but also genuine objects of social prestige. They were usually richly bound (in morocco leather with gold embossing and often bearing the heraldic arms of the person to whom they were dedicated on the covers) and opened with these types of copperplate frontispieces to flatter the high nobility or the royal family that sponsored the edition. Since the duchess died prematurely in 1712, these plates continued to be used or copied in immediately subsequent editions (such as the frequent ones of 1710, 1723, and 1728) either as a tribute or due to the commercial success of the design.
