Juana de Arco fue una mística y héroe de Francia por su papel en la contienda de la guerra de los cien años, patrona de Francia, canonizada por el Papa PioX en 1920, fue proclamada Santa de la Iglésia Católica el 16 de Mayo de 1920 por el Papa Benedicto XX.

Joan of Arc was a mystic and hero of France for her role in the Hundred Years' War, patron saint of France, canonized by Pope Pius X in 1920, she was proclaimed a Saint of the Catholic Church on May 16, 1920 by Pope Benedict XX.

La estampa presenta una escena narrativa de carácter histórico-clásico o bíblico ambientada en una plaza pública urbana de arquitectura renacentista y romana.

The print presents a narrative scene of a historical-classical or biblical nature set in an urban public square with Renaissance and Roman architecture.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY :

Primer plano (Izquierda): 

Un personaje de alta jerarquía o dignidad, tocado con un turbante o tocado exótico y vestiduras talares (toga/túnica), interactúa con un grupo de figuras suplicantes o que le rinden tributo, junto a la base de una monumental torre cilíndrica de sillería almohadillada.

Zona central: 

Escena de trasiego y carga. Diversos personajes transportan fardos o sacos a la espalda, lo que sugiere el aprovisionamiento de la ciudad, el pago de un tributo en especie o el comercio en un mercado.

Primer plano (Derecha): 

Un grupo de soldados con indumentaria de corte clásico (algunos portando escudos de tipo clipeus o rodelas) y túnicas cortas se reúnen junto a una gran ánfora o vasija depositada en el suelo, en actitud de recibir o distribuir bienes.

Fondo arquitectónico: 

Perspectiva urbana dominada en el centro por un gran edificio de fachada triangular piñonada, provisto de una arquería de medio punto en su planta baja (estilo loggia o lonja comercial) y un óculo o relieve circular en el frontis. Al fondo a la izquierda, se divisa una aguja o capitel gótico/renacentista entre el caserío. El cielo muestra nubes densas modeladas mediante líneas horizontales paralelas y bandas de aves en vuelo.

Foreground (Left):

A high-ranking or dignified figure, wearing a turban or exotic headdress and a long robe (toga/tunic), interacts with a group of supplicants or figures paying tribute, next to the base of a monumental cylindrical tower of rusticated ashlar masonry.

Center:

A scene of movement and loading. Several figures carry bundles or sacks on their backs, suggesting the provisioning of the city, the payment of tribute in kind, or trade in a market.

Foreground (Right):

A group of soldiers in classically styled attire (some carrying clipeus-type shields or bucklers) and short tunics gather next to a large amphora or vessel placed on the ground, in the act of receiving or distributing goods.

Architectural background:

An urban perspective dominated in the center by a large building with a triangular, pine-roofed facade, featuring a semicircular arcade on its ground floor (loggia or market hall style) and an oculus or circular relief on the frontispiece. In the background to the left, a Gothic/Renaissance spire or capital is visible among the houses. The sky displays dense clouds modeled with parallel horizontal lines and bands of birds in flight.

Talla directa sobre madera de hilo con un repertorio de líneas paralelas para los sombreados (hatching) y un uso limitado del sombreado cruzado (cross-hatching), característico de las ilustraciones xilográficas de crónicas y ediciones de autores clásicos (como Tito Livio, Virgilio o Flavio Josefo) de mediados del siglo XVI.

Direct carving on wood with a repertoire of parallel lines for hatching and a limited use of cross-hatching, characteristic of the woodcut illustrations of chronicles and editions of classical authors (such as Livy, Virgil or Flavius ​​Josephus) from the mid-16th century.
