PERIODO / PERIOD :

An engraving from the late Renaissance or Mannerist period, deeply influenced by the publishing and printing hubs established in the Free Imperial City of Augsburg during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

CONTEXTO / CONTEXT :

During this historical period, Augsburg was one of Europe’s major hubs for the publication of genealogical books, illustrated chronicles, and copperplate engravings. Engravers such as the Fleming Dominicus Custos settled in Augsburg, blending the meticulous detail and technical rigor of the Low Countries with the monumental quality of the Mannerism that prevailed in Germanic and Central European courts under the patronage of the Habsburgs. The influence of this school remained deeply rooted in the city through local artists like Lucas and Wolfgang Kilian, who perpetuated this style of courtly, official, and heraldic portraiture—a style characteristic of the upper bourgeoisie and the nobility of the Holy Roman Empire.

Pedro II of Portugal, nicknamed "the Pacific," served as prince regent starting in 1683 and subsequently became King of Portugal and the Algarves. He was the seventh child of King John IV—founder of the House of Braganza following the restoration of Portuguese independence—and Queen Luisa de Guzmán. His older brother, King Afonso VI, was deemed unfit to rule due to physical and mental health issues. In 1667, Pedro led a conspiracy to depose him, resulting in Afonso’s exile to the Azores, while Pedro assumed governance as Prince Regent. Following the death of Afonso VI in 1683, Pedro formally ascended the throne as an absolute monarch. In an unusual political and dynastic move, after ousting his brother, Pedro married his brother’s wife—Queen Maria Francisca of Savoy-Nemours—having first obtained a papal dispensation. After her death, he married for a second time to Maria Sophia of Neuburg, with whom he had the future King John V.

Dom Pedro is depicted in a three-quarter bust portrait, wearing intricately engraved military armor—typical of a nobleman or commander from the Baroque period—complemented by a lace cravat or neckerchief. The figure is enclosed within a simple oval frame that simulates carved molding, topped by a large, flowing fabric bow with tassels at its ends. At the bottom center of the frame lies the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves, surmounted by the royal crown and flanked by floral or ornamental motifs. Flanking the heraldic shield, and arranged in two columns, is an extensive inscription in French detailing his genealogy, historical context, his succession to his brother Afonso VI, his marriage to Maria Francisca of Savoy—following a dispensation from Pope Clement IX—as well as the attribution to the Parisian publishers and printers.

Coming from a distinguished family belonging to the *noblesse de robe* (nobility of the robe), he was the nephew of the influential minister Abel Servien, under whose tutelage he began to distinguish himself in affairs of state at the age of eighteen. Thanks to his political talent, he was sent as an ambassador and plenipotentiary on several high-stakes missions to Italy—including Venice, Rome, and the court of Parma. He took part in key negotiations of his era, such as the imperial election and the conclusion of major peace treaties. He held the position of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, establishing himself as Louis XIV’s right-hand man in crafting the European alliances that defined French absolutism in the 17th century.

The central portrait depicts Hugues de Lionne framed within a classic oval, dressed in formal 17th-century court attire—notably featuring a lace collar that reflects his elevated status within high society and French diplomacy. At the bottom, integrated into the architectural design of the pedestal supporting the oval, is the family coat of arms—a symbol of nobility, ancient lineage, and political standing. The text inscribed on the cartouche below serves as both an iconographic and propagandistic element, designed to perpetuate the memory of his titles (Marquis de Berny and de Frenay), his official positions, and his diplomatic achievements in the service of the Crown.
