Federico I de Hohenstaufen, conocido popularmente como Barbarroja,fue Emperador del Sacro Imperio Romano Germanico desde 1155 hasta su muerte.
Su reinado representó la cúspide del poder medieval germánico, marcado por sus constantes luchas de poder con el papado y las ricas ciudades-estado del norte de Italia

His reign represented the pinnacle of medieval Germanic power, marked by his constant power struggles with the papacy and the wealthy city-states of northern Italy.

Soutman fue un destacado pintor, dibujante y editor de estampas de Haarlem, discípulo directo de Pedro Pablo Rubens. Aunque la inscripción reza Pinxit (lo pintó), es habitual en la estampa de la época que Soutman figurase como el autor del diseño original o del prototipo pictórico. Soutman concibió una famosa y monumental serie de retratos dinásticos dedicada a los emperadores de la Casa de Austria (Imperatores Domus Austriacae), grabada inicialmente en los años 1640 por artistas de su taller (como Pieter van Sompel o Jacob Louys).

Soutman was a prominent painter, draughtsman, and print publisher from Haarlem, a direct pupil of Peter Paul Rubens. Although the inscription reads Pinxit (he painted it), it was common in prints of the period for Soutman to be credited as the author of the original design or the pictorial prototype. Soutman conceived a famous and monumental series of dynastic portraits dedicated to the emperors of the House of Austria (Imperatores Domus Austriacae), initially engraved in the 1640s by artists in his workshop (such as Pieter van Sompel and Jacob Louys).

La presencia de Basan en la firma de grabado (Sculpsit) nos sitúa ante una regrabación o edición del siglo XVIII. Pierre-François Basan fue un prolífico grabador, marchante y editor parisino, célebre por adquirir planchas de cobre antiguas de maestros flamencos, holandeses y franceses para retrabajarlas, refrescar sus líneas y volver a publicarlas en recopilatorios de estampas (como el conocido Dictionnaire des graveurs o sus diversos Recueils).
Este grabado en concreto es una reducción o una réplica tardía ejecutada por el taller de Basan a partir del modelo monumental barroco que Soutman había diseñado en el siglo XVII para la serie imperial. El buril de Basan homogeneiza el fondo y las texturas con una red de líneas cruzadas típicamente dieciochesca, adaptando el retrato al formato de libro ilustrado o colección de retratos históricos en boga en el París del siglo XVIII.

The presence of Basan's signature (Sculpsit) in the engraving indicates that this is an 18th-century re-engraving or edition. Pierre-François Basan was a prolific Parisian engraver, art dealer, and publisher, renowned for acquiring antique copper plates by Flemish, Dutch, and French masters, reworking them, refreshing their lines, and republishing them in collections of prints (such as the well-known Dictionnaire des graveurs and its various Recueils).
This particular engraving is a reduction or a later replica executed by Basan's workshop based on the monumental Baroque model that Soutman had designed in the 17th century for the Imperial series. Basan's burin homogenizes the background and textures with a network of cross-hatched lines, typical of the 18th century, adapting the portrait to the format of the illustrated book or collection of historical portraits that was fashionable in 18th-century Paris
