Eduardo V de Inglaterra fue el primogénito varón del rey Eduardo IV y de su esposa Isabel Woodwille. Fue Rey de Inglaterra a la muerte de su padre Eduardo IV el 9 de abril de 1483, hasta la adhesión de su tío Ricardo III el 25 de junio de 1483 confirmada por la Ley titulada Titulus Regius, que denunció cualquier otra reclamación a través de los herederos de su padre. No se lo consideraba con la edad suficiente para ser coronado rey, su reinado de 86 días fue dominado por la influencia de su tío y Lord Proyector que le sucedió.
Edward V of England was the eldest son of King Edward IV and his wife, Elizabeth Woodville. He became King of England upon the death of his father, Edward IV, on April 9, 1483, until the accession of his uncle, Richard III, on June 25, 1483, confirmed by the Act of Titulus Regius, which renounced any further claims through his father's heirs. Not considered old enough to be crowned king, his 86-day reign was dominated by the influence of his uncle and the Lord Protector who succeeded him.

Este retrato forma parte de un ambicioso proyecto editorial francés de mediados del siglo XVIII. Basan grabó una serie de efigies de monarcas, regentes y nobles británicos (siguiendo los modelos compositivos e iconográficos de Vertue) que habitualmente se integraron en publicaciones destinadas a coleccionistas de la época, como la monumental obra de biografías ilustradas L'Europe illustre (publicada en París entre 1755 y 1765 por Michel Odieuvre y el historiador Dreux du Radier).
La calidad de las líneas en la talla dulce (especialmente el sombreado regular del fondo que rodea al óvalo y la delicadeza de las texturas del armiño) es muy representativa del característico y limpio estilo técnico del taller de Basan.
This portrait is part of an ambitious French publishing project from the mid-18th century. Basan engraved a series of effigies of British monarchs, regents, and nobles (following the compositional and iconographic models of Vertue) that were typically included in publications intended for collectors of the time, such as the monumental illustrated biographies L'Europe illustre (published in Paris between 1755 and 1765 by Michel Odieuvre and the historian Dreux du Radier).
The quality of the lines in the intaglio carving (especially the even shading of the background surrounding the oval and the delicacy of the ermine textures) is highly representative of the characteristic and clean technical style of Basan's workshop.
