Sir Conrad Ruthven conocido en las crónicas de la época por el sobrenombre de "Red Ruthven", fue un militar y noble escocés.
perteneció a una de las prominentes ramas militares de la familia Ruthven, que cobraron especial notoriedad durante la Guerra de los Treinta Años en la primera mitad del siglo XVII. Al igual que muchos de sus parientes (como Sir Patrick Ruthven, conde de Forth y Brentford), sirvió como mercenario de alto rango en la Europa continental, destacando en el ejército sueco bajo las órdenes del rey Gustavo II Adolfo.
Sir Conrad Ruthven, known in contemporary accounts as "Red Ruthven," was a Scottish military officer and nobleman.
He belonged to one of the prominent military branches of the Ruthven family, which rose to prominence during the Thirty Years' War in the first half of the 17th century. Like many of his relatives (such as Sir Patrick Ruthven, Earl of Forth and Brentford), he served as a high-ranking mercenary in continental Europe, notably in the Swedish army under King Gustavus Adolphus.

El grabado sigue las convenciones formales del retrato cortesano y militar del Norte de Europa de las primeras décadas del siglo XVII, adaptado al lenguaje del grabado de reproducción de finales del siglo XVIII.
Encuadre Ovalado (en médailon):
La figura se inscribe en un óvalo que enmarca la cabeza y el torso superior. Este recurso, muy difundido desde el Renacimiento tardío, actúa como un elemento de dignificación para conmemorar a personajes ilustres o militares.
Gola de Lechuguilla (Ruff):
Porta un cuello plisado rígido de encaje o lino fino, emblemático de la indumentaria civil y militar europea entre finales del siglo XVI y los años 1620. Refleja estatus social elevado y una estricta adhesión a la moda aristocrática de la época de Jacobo VI de Escocia / I de Inglaterra.
Jubón y Abotonadura:
Viste un jubón oscuro ajustado con una hilera central de botones pulidos. Las franjas horizontales de adorno (pasamanería) sugieren una prenda militar o de alta etiqueta de la nobleza escocesa en el servicio militar europeo.
Retrato Psicológico y Fisonomía:
Mantiene la mirada fija hacia el espectador con una expresión sobria. Destacan la barba de perilla recortada y el bigote, un peinado facial habitual entre la oficialidad militar que sirvió en las campañas del Norte de Europa y la Guerra de los Treinta Años.
Fondo Neutro con Tramado:
El fondo dentro del óvalo está resuelto mediante un denso tramado cruzado (cross-hatching), técnica característica de Cornelius Tiebout para generar volumen y hacer destacar el rostro y la blancura de la gola.
Oval Framing (in a medallion):
The figure is inscribed within an oval that frames the head and upper torso. This device, widely used since the late Renaissance, serves as a dignified element to commemorate illustrious or military figures.
Ruff:
He wears a stiff, pleated collar of lace or fine linen, emblematic of European civilian and military attire between the late 16th century and the 1620s. It reflects high social status and strict adherence to the aristocratic fashion of the time of James VI of Scotland / I of England.
Doublet and Buttons:
He wears a fitted dark doublet with a central row of polished buttons. The horizontal decorative bands (trimmings) suggest a military garment or high-dress attire of the Scottish nobility in European military service.
Psychological Portrait and Physiognomy:
He maintains a fixed gaze toward the viewer with a sober expression. The neatly trimmed goatee and mustache stand out, a common facial hairstyle among military officers who served in the Northern European campaigns and the Thirty Years' War.
Neutral Background with Crosshatching:
The background within the oval is rendered using dense crosshatching, a technique characteristic of Cornelius Tiebout to create volume and highlight the face and the whiteness of the ruff.
