Jacopo Sadoleto fue una de las figuras más respetadas de la Reforma católica. Brillante latinista, fue secretario de los papas León X y Clemente VII antes de ser elevado a cardenal por el papa Pablo III en 1536. Es recordado por su postura moderada ante la creciente Reforma protestante, destacando su correspondencia teológica con Juan Calvino en 1539 (la Carta a los ginebrinos), en la que intentó persuadir a Ginebra para que volviera al catolicismo.

Jacopo Sadoleto was one of the most respected figures of the Catholic Reformation. A brilliant Latinist, he served as a secretary to Pope Leo X and Pope Clement VII before being elevated to Cardinal by Pope Paul III in 1536.

He is famously remembered for his moderate approach to the rising Protestant Reformation, notably engaged in a high-profile theological correspondence with John Calvin in 1539 (the Letter to the Genevans), attempting to persuade Geneva to return to the Catholic fold.

Jacopo Sadoleto aparece representado en su madurez, con una barba poblada y bien cuidada, luciendo una birreta tradicional y una muceta cardenalicia. Su mirada se dirige tres cuartos hacia la izquierda, transmitiendo solemnidad intelectual y serenidad.

Ornamentación: El retrato ovalado se encuentra dentro de un elaborado cartucho manierista con motivos de cintas, volutas, elementos florales estilizados y grotescas cabezas de criaturas marinas míticas en las esquinas inferiores.

Jacobo Sadoleto is depicted in his later years, with a full, well-groomed beard, wearing a traditional biretta and cardinal's mozzetta. His gaze is directed three-quarters to the left, conveying intellectual solemnity and serenity.

Ornamentation: The oval portrait is set within an elaborate Mannerist cartouche adorned with ribbons, scrolls, stylized floral motifs, and grotesque heads of mythical sea creatures in the lower corners.

The composition and ornate framing strongly point to the circle of the renowned Flemish-German engraver and publisher Theodor de Bry (1528–1598) or his sons (Johann Theodor and Johann Israel de Bry).

El retrato está enmarcado por un rico borde de estilo manierista tardío con motivos de rollos y cintas (Rollwerk). Presenta motivos grotescos típicos del Renacimiento, como hojas de acanto estilizadas, guirnaldas florales y criaturas marinas híbridas simétricas que flanquean el marco.

The portrait is enclosed in a rich, late Mannerist roll-and-strapwork border (Rollwerk). It features typical Renaissance grotesque motifs, including stylized acanthus leaves, floral garlands, and symmetrical hybrid sea-creatures flanking the frame.
