AUTOR / AUTHOR :
Wolfgang Kilian (1581–1662)
Wolfgang Kilian (1581–1662)
While Merian engraved the plate used in this publication, the overall visual prototype and Latin epigram ("Cuius in hac spirat generosus imagine vultus...") originate from a famous 1619 broadsheet portrait by the Augsburg engraver Wolfgang Kilian
Kilian’s original portrait was issued shortly after Bucquoy took command of the Imperial forces at the start of the Thirty Years' War.
As was standard practice among 17th-century publishers, Merian copied and adapted Kilian’s widely circulated composition, re-engraving it onto a smaller copperplate formatted for book insertion.

Central Portrait & Oval Frame:
The core image of Bucquoy, the oval inscription ring, and the Latin epigram below were printed from an engraved copper plate.
Line Work & Hatching:

Fine cross-hatching models the metallic sheen on the armor, facial features, and hair curls.
Deeply incised lines create strong contrast between highlights (uninked paper) and shadow.
