Nicolas Bergasse fue un jurista, escritor, abogado, filosofo y político francès, diputado en 1789 de los estados generales, llego a París procedente de Lyon en 1775 para ejercer de abogado del parlamento, frecuento los salones de París junto con Jean- Jacques Rousseau.
Nicolas Bergasse was a French jurist, writer, lawyer, philosopher and politician, and a deputy to the Estates General in 1789. He arrived in Paris from Lyon in 1775 to practise as a lawyer at the Parliament, where he frequented the salons of Paris alongside Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

El retrato sigue los códigos neoclásicos tardíos europeos para grabados de formato medio en Francia:
Composición:
El retratado se inscribe en un óvalo central, con la mirada dirigida hacia tres cuartos a la izquierda, sugiriendo inspiración y vivacidad intelectual. Viste la indumentaria civil de la época, con el cuello de la camisa abierto de manera informal, rasgo típico de las representaciones de pensadores, filósofos y oradores ilustrados de finales del siglo XVIII.
Marco:
Estructura rectangular con tramas de líneas paralelas finas que imitan el texturizado arquitectónico, rematada en la zona inferior por una cartela moldurada (cartouche) que alberga la dedicatoria poética, aislando tipográficamente el texto del retrato principal.

Composition:
The sitter is framed within a central oval, his gaze directed three-quarters to the left, suggesting inspiration and intellectual vivacity. He wears the civilian attire of the period, with his shirt collar open in a casual manner, a typical feature of representations of Enlightenment thinkers, philosophers, and orators of the late 18th century.
Frame:
A rectangular structure with a pattern of fine parallel lines that imitate architectural texture, finished at the bottom with a molded cartouche containing the poetic dedication, typographically isolating the text from the main portrait.
