A skilled political negotiator, he played a decisive role in the diplomatic talks with Russia and Austria that led to the First Partition of Poland (1772).
In 1786, following the American Revolutionary War, certain figures in the Continental Congress (such as Nathaniel Gorham) considered the idea of offering him the throne, should the country choose to establish a constitutional monarchy—a proposal that did not come to fruition.

Despite the absence of a visible signature in the lower margin, the style of the portrait, the cursive script used for the inscription, and the neoclassical architectural framing indicate that this piece belongs to the school of Prussian engravers from the last third of the 18th century (c. 1770–1790).

Following the Seven Years' War
(1756–1763), Prussia established itself as one of the great military and intellectual powers of Europe.
Prince Henry was hailed as the strategic genius behind the scenes and the true savior of the Prussian army against the Austro-Russian coalition. Citizens and the nobility alike sought out portraits of their military leaders, turning Henry and his brother, King Frederick the Great, into popular icons.

Although the engraving highlights his military side, Henry was a prominent figure in Enlightenment thought. At his residence, Rheinsberg Palace—surrounded by artists, philosophers, and intellectuals—he promoted French theater, literature, and the visual arts, serving as a cultural counterweight to the court in Berlin.
