Christof Kress von Kressenstain fue un magistrado de Nuremberg ligado al tratado de paz de Westafalia de 1648 que puso fin a la guerra de los treinta años.

Nota sobre la cronología:
Existe una discordancia histórica curiosa en las fechas de las inscripciones de este tipo de retratos conmemorativos. Aunque la filiación de la cartela menciona el año 1560, los registros históricos sitúan el fallecimiento de Christoph Kress en 1535

Debajo del monograma HK, aparece la fecha en números romanos M.D.XXXX. (1540), que remite al año del modelo pictórico original que copió Troschel para abrir la plancha.

Sobre la mesa, el personaje apoya la mano sobre un libro en cuyas páginas se lee la máxima:
“Gott verleih mir Gnad und hülff”
Esquinas superiores e inferiores:
Las enjutas exteriores al óvalo albergan las armas familiares y motivos heráldicos característicos de los Kress von Kressenstein, incluyendo el motivo del animal (cordero pascual / Kress en la heráldica local) en la parte inferior derecha.
Indumentaria y atributos:
El retratado viste la vestimenta patricia propia de la primera mitad del siglo XVI: una pesada hopalanda o jubón con mangas acuchilladas y cuello rematado en pequeño lechuguino rizado, rematado por una gorra plana o bonete (Tellermütze). En la mano izquierda sostiene una flor (un clavel, símbolo común de fidelidad y transitoriedad), mientras que de su cinturón pende una daga ornamentada.

Note on chronology:
There is a curious historical discrepancy in the dates of inscriptions on this type of commemorative portrait. Although the inscription on the cartouche mentions the year 1560, historical records place Christoph Kress's death in 1535.
Inscription in the background (upper left field):
Below the monogram HK, the date appears in Roman numerals M.D.XXXX (1540), referring to the year of the original pictorial model that Troschel copied to create the plate.
Inscription on the open book: On the table, the figure rests his hand on a book whose “Gott verleih mir Gnad und hülff”
Upper and lower corners:
The spandrels outside the oval house the family arms and heraldic motifs characteristic of the Kress von Kressenstein, including the animal motif (paschal lamb / Kress in local heraldry) in the lower right.
Clothing and attributes:
The subject wears the patrician attire typical of the first half of the 16th century: a heavy doublet or vest with slashed sleeves and a collar finished with a small ruffled ruff, topped by a flat cap or bonnet (Tellermütze). In his left hand he holds a flower (a carnation, a common symbol of fidelity and transience), while an ornate dagger hangs from his belt.
