ICONOGRAFIA / ICONOGRAPHY :

El personaje aparece retratado de tres cuartos, girado hacia la izquierda pero con la mirada fija en el espectador, luciendo una voluminosa peluca allonge y la característica corbata de encaje (rabat) propias de la moda académica y profesional del último tercio del siglo XVII.

En la parte inferior, el retrato cuenta con un cartel o filacteria que contiene una elegante inscripción laudatoria en latín sobre su linaje y parecido familiar:

"ROMPIVS hoc vultu est, et non est: vera fuisset / Effigies, magni si Patris ista foret..

The figure is portrayed in three-quarter view, turned to the left but with his gaze fixed on the viewer, sporting a voluminous allonge wig and the characteristic lace cravat (rabat) typical of academic and professional fashion in the last third of the 17th century. At the bottom, the portrait features a cartouche or scroll containing an elegant, laudatory inscription in Latin about his lineage and family resemblance: "ROMPIVS hoc vultu est, et non est: vera fuisset / Effigies, magni si Patris ista foret..

OBSERVACIONES / OBSERVATION:

Por la estructura del marco y la cartela inferior, el grabado fue concebido casi con total seguridad como frontispicio para una tesis médica, una compilación de disertaciones o una obra monográfica publicada en los Países Bajos o Alemania a finales del siglo XVII o principios del XVIII.

Judging by the structure of the frame and the lower cartouche, the engraving was almost certainly conceived as a frontispiece for a medical thesis, a compilation of dissertations, or a monographic work published in the Netherlands or Germany in the late 17th or early 18th century.

Santo Tomás de Villanueva fue un fraile Agustino Español apodado " el padre de los pobres " alma mater de la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, nombrado Arzobispo de Valencia a instancias de Carlos V fue beatificado por Pablo V en 1618 y canonizado por Alejandro VII en 1658.

Saint Thomas of Villanueva was a Spanish Augustinian friar, alma mather of the University of Alcalá de Henares, named Archbishop  of Valencia at the request of Charles V, beatified by Paul in 1618 and canonized by Alexander VII in 1658,

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY:

• Iconografía de la Caridad:

• Se muestra al santo con sus atributos episcopales (mitra ricamente decorada y capa pluvial con aplicaciones bordadas, donde se aprecia una escena de la Virgen con el Niño y San Juan Bautista en la parte inferior). Con su mano izquierda sostiene el báculo en forma de cruz, mientras que con la derecha entrega monedas a una madre y sus hijos desvalidos, una composición clásica para este santo.

• Heráldica:

• En el centro de la cartela inferior destaca el escudo de armas tallado, el cual corresponde a las barras de la Archidiócesis de Valencia o del Reino de Valencia, timbrado con un sombrero episcopal de pocas borlas o corona, vinculándolo directamente con su sede arzobispal.

• Estilo y datación:

• Por las características del grabado, el modelado de las sombras mediante líneas cruzadas densas y la tipografía de las inscripciones, la pieza se encuadra plenamente en el primer tercio del siglo XVII (hacia 1618 o muy poco después), probablemente ejecutada con motivo de los festejos y publicaciones de su beatificación en Roma, Valencia o Flandes (centros principales de producción de estampas devocionales de la época para el ámbito hispánico)

• The saint is depicted with his episcopal attributes (a richly decorated mitre and cope with embroidered appliqués, where a scene of the Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist can be seen at the bottom). In his left hand, he holds a crosier in the shape of a cross, while with his right, he gives coins to a mother and her destitute children, a classic composition for this saint.
  Heraldry:
  In the center of the lower cartouche, the carved coat of arms stands out, which corresponds to the bars of the Archdiocese of Valencia or the Kingdom of Valencia, surmounted by an episcopal hat with few tassels or a crown, directly linking it to his archiepiscopal see.
  Style and Dating:
  Based on the characteristics of the engraving, the modeling of shadows with dense cross-hatching, and the typography of the inscriptions, the piece is firmly placed in the first third of the 17th century (around 1618 or shortly thereafter), probably executed for the celebrations and publications surrounding his beatification in Rome, Valencia, or Flanders (the main centers for the production of devotional prints of the period for the Hispanic world).
