Diego Ernesto  de Habsburgo , Archiduque de Austria, Príncipe de Bohemia y Hungría, Caballero del Toisón de Oro, desde 1576 gobernó el Archiducado de Austria, nombrado en 1590 regente de los ducados de Estíria, Caríntia y Carnólia en la Austria Interior, en 1594 es nombrado por Felipe II Gobernador de los Países bajos Españoles.

Diego Ernesto of Habsburg, ArchDuke of Austria, Prince of Bohemia and Hungary, knight of the golden fleece, from 1576 ruled the Archduchy of Austria, appointed in 1590 regent of the Duchies of Styria, Carinthia and Carnolia in inner Austria, in 1594 he was appointed by Philip II Governor of the Spanish Netherlands.

El archiduque Ernesto de Austria fue gobernador de los Países Bajos españoles desde 1594 hasta su muerte en febrero de 1595. Grabados de este mismo tipo se realizaron durante su mandato o poco después, y aparecen en libros de retratos y crónicas neerlandesas de principios del siglo XVII.

Archduke Ernest of Austria served as Governor of the Spanish Netherlands from 1594 until his death in February 1595. Prints of this exact type were executed during his governorship or produced shortly thereafter in early 17th-century Netherlandish portrait books and chronicles.

Sujeto:

Busto de perfil de un anciano mirando hacia la derecha, caracterizado por una nariz aguileña prominente, mentón marcado y frente amplia. Vestimenta:

Lleva una peluca empolvada del siglo XVIII atada a la nuca (cola), un frac formal con elaborados adornos de ojales/trenzas, cuello alto y una corbata de encaje con volantes (jabot). Composición:

Medallón circular/ovalado sobre un fondo oscuro con trama cruzada para crear profundidad. Debajo del borde ovalado, se aprecia una pequeña inscripción/firma grabada ("May del. et sculp. 1789" )

Subject: 

Profile bust of an elderly man facing right, characterized by a prominent aquiline nose, pronounced chin, and high forehead. 

 Costume: 

Wears an 18th-century powdered wig tied at the nape (queue), a formal frock coat with ornate buttonhole trim/braiding, a high collar, and a ruffled lace cravat (jabot).

Composition: 

Circular/oval medallion set against a dark, cross-hatched background to create depth. Below the oval rim, a small etched inscription/signature line is visible ("May del. et sculp. 1789" ).

JONAS ALSTROMER  ( 1685 - 1761 )

Jonas Alstromer fue un comerciante y pionero de la agricultura industrial, introdujo el cultivo de la patata entre otros cultivos en Suecia, miembro desde 1739 de la academia de ciencias de Suecia y distinguido con la Real Orden de la Estrella Polar de Suecia.

Jonas Alstromer was a merchant and pioneer of industrial agriculture, introduced the cultivation of potatoes among other crops in Sweden, member since 1739 of The Swedish Academy of Sciences and distinguished with The Royal Order of The Polar Star of Sweden.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY

Lema y estandarte:

Debajo del marco ovalado, una banderola muestra el lema sueco «FÄDERNESLANDET» («La Patria»), que refleja el sentido del deber cívico y el servicio patriótico al desarrollo económico propios de la Ilustración. Escudo de armas:

En la base del marco se encuentra el escudo de armas nobiliario (adelsvapen) de Alströmer, otorgado tras su ennoblecimiento en 1751, con un escudo central rematado por un yelmo. Insignia de caballería:

Bajo el escudo de armas, prendida en el pecho, cuelga la cruz de la Real Orden de la Estrella Polar (Kungliga Nordstjärneorden), establecida en 1748 para honrar el mérito cívico, los logros científicos y el servicio a Suecia. Vestimenta y peluca:

Representado con atuendo formal de mediados del siglo XVIII, incluyendo una larga peluca rizada y empolvada (estilo allonge), una corbata alta de tela metida dentro de un abrigo abotonado y una chaqueta bordada típica de los altos funcionarios del gobierno (Commerceråd). Marco y entorno:

Ubicado dentro de una abertura ovalada de estilo clasicista (marco ovalado de piedra con trampantojo) adornado con guirnaldas de cintas en la parte superior, sobre un pedestal arquitectónico que alberga las inscripciones.

Motto & Banner:

Below the oval frame, a banderole displays the Swedish motto "FÄDERNESLANDET" ("The Fatherland"), reflecting Enlightenment-era civic duty and patriotic service to economic development.

Coat of Arms:

Positioned at the base of the frame is Alströmer's noble coat of arms (adelsvapen), granted upon his ennoblement in 1751, featuring a central shield capped by a helm.

Insignia of Knighthood:

Suspended beneath the coat of arms and pinned to his breast is the cross of the Royal Order of the Polar Star (Kungliga Nordstjärneorden), established in 1748 to honor civic merit, scientific achievement, and service to Sweden.

Attire & Wig:

Depicted in formal mid-18th-century attire, including a long curled powdered wig (allonge style), a high fabric cravat tucked into a buttoned coat, and an embroidered jacket typical of high-ranking government officials (Commerceråd).

Frame & Surround:

Housed within a classicizing oval aperture (trompe-l'œil stone oval frame) adorned with ribbon garlands at the crest, resting on an architectural pedestal that houses the inscriptions.
