Jacques Amyot was born in Melun into a humble family. Thanks to his talent and inclination towards learning, he was able to study at the Collège de France (then Lecteurs Royaux), where he perfected his knowledge of Classical Greek and Latin. Appointed Professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Bourges, he became tutor to the children of King Henry II (the future Kings Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III), which definitively boosted his courtly and ecclesiastical career.

Technical Analysis of the Print
Process: Intaglio/Blank engraving on a copper plate (chalcography).
Main tool: Burin. The direct, sharp stroke on the metal creates clean, beveled lines without burrs (unlike drypoint).
Cross-hatching
Modeling of the face: Very fine, short lines arranged at curved angles to follow the anatomy of the cheek, cheekbones, and forehead, achieving facial volume and the nuances of the beard.
Fabrics and folds: Networks of thick parallel lines combined with diagonal cross-hatching to create deep shadows in the mozzetta and clerical vestments.
Ink and Printing: Dense intaglio ink applied with a French press and printed using a printing press on laid paper. In contemporary prints, the imprint of the polished matrix (platen) is visible around the perimeter.

MATERIAL:

Laid paper, also known as rag paper, is handmade. It is composed of linen or cotton fibers and is distinguishable when held up to the light by the marks left by the manufacturing mold.
