Carlos V de Francia apodado " el sabio " fue un soberano francés de la dinastia de Valois, regente de francia entre 1356 y 1360 año en que fue proclamado rey, cargo que ocupo hasta su muerte en 1380, es recordado por recuperar los territorios franceses que cayeron a manos de los ingleses durante la primera parte de la guerrra de los cien años.
He was a sovereign of the Valois dynasty, ruled as regent of France between 1356 and 1360, then in 1360 he was proclaimed king, a position he held until his death in 1380. He is remembered for recovering the French territories that fell to the English during the first part of the Hundred Years' War,
ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY
Los búhos:
Dos búhos se alzan prominentemente sobre las cornucopias en la base del medallón. En la tradición clásica occidental (asociada a Atenea/Minerva), el búho es el símbolo principal de la sabiduría, la prudencia y el saber, haciendo referencia directa al epíteto de Carlos V, «el Sabio», y a su reputación como monarca erudito y fundador de la Biblioteca Real.
Las cornucopias:
Cuernos de la abundancia rebosantes de fruta flanquean el pedestal, simbolizando la abundancia, la paz y la prosperidad que el reino trajo consigo mediante un gobierno sabio, en lugar de la destrucción en el campo de batalla.
El medallón de perfil:
Representado al estilo de una medalla o moneda antigua, enmarca al rey en un perfil estricto. Esto refleja el lenguaje visual neoestoico y anticuario del siglo XVII, vinculando la monarquía francesa con la virtud y la perdurabilidad imperiales de la Roma clásica.
Capa y corona de armiño:
El forro de armiño de su manto simboliza la pureza y la justicia reales, mientras que la corona abierta con la flor de lis establece su legitimidad soberana divina (DEI GRATIA).

The Owls:
Two owls sit prominently atop the cornucopias at the base of the medallion. In Western classical tradition (associated with Athena/Minerva), the owl is the primary symbol of wisdom, prudence, and scholarship, directly referencing Charles V’s epithet "le Sage" and his reputation as a learned monarch and founder of the Royal Library.
The Cornucopias:
Horns of plenty overflowing with fruit flank the pedestal, symbolizing abundance, peace, and prosperity brought to the realm through wise governance rather than battlefield destruction.
The Profile Medallion:
