The medallion portrait (*Imago Clipeata*):
The effigy appears within a circular frame or *tondo*, mimicking the classical tradition of relief portraits on medals or cameos; this lends the figure an air of timeless authority and imperial or royal status. Heraldry and the title of Dauphin:
The two dolphins sculpted at the base of the pedestal serve as a direct, "canting" iconographic device—a visual pun—alluding to his dignity as heir to the French throne (*Dauphin de France*). The motto above (*Donec totum impleat orbem*):
The inscriptions in the upper corners feature the motto that often accompanies his emblem (the crescent moon), symbolizing the growth of his power and influence until it fills the entire world. Renaissance royal attire:
Henry II wears a flat hat adorned with feathers and jewels and sports the collar of the Order of Saint Michael (characteristic of the highest French royalty of the era), reinforcing his dynastic rank. Reference to the original model:
The lower cartouche explicitly states "*De son Portrait au Louvre*" ("From his portrait at the Louvre"), indicating that this print is part of a series of engraved portraits based on official paintings held in the French royal collection.
