JESÚS EN LA CRUZ. Grabado del Siglo XVII

JESÚS EN LA CRUZ
17th century engraver

... with his Cross lying down, Jesus went out to a place called Golgotha and there they crucified him, with him were two others, one on either side of him...

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHIC:
  • Figura Central:

    • Central Figure:

    • Christ appears suspended on the cross in a strikingly dramatic and mystical pose, his arms outstretched vertically at a sharp angle. His head, surrounded by a radiant halo of fine lines, is turned upwards, his gaze directed towards heaven, capturing the moment of his death. The anatomy shows a clear influence of the Mannerist-Baroque school of Northern Europe. At the top of the cross, the titulus crucis with the inscription "INRI" is visible on a torn scroll.

    • The Skull and Bone:

    • Located at the base, they represent the skull of Adam (iconographic tradition of Golgotha), symbolizing that Christ's sacrifice redeems Original Sin.

    • The Serpent and the Cube:

    • On the right, a serpent coils around a cubic or rectangular block (which can be interpreted as the cornerstone, the altar of sacrifice, or the tomb). Nearby is a small apple, reinforcing the allegory of the fall of man and Christ's ultimate triumph over sin and the devil (represented by the serpent).

    • Background:

    • A detailed panoramic view of an idealized Jerusalem unfolds, highlighting elements of classical and Renaissance architecture, including a large dome (evoking the Holy Sepulchre or the Temple) alongside towers and obelisks under a stormy sky of dense clouds, executed with a severe chiaroscuro.

Mallery" o "C. v. M. fe." (fecit).

This abbreviation is characteristic of Flemish engravers of the Antwerp school active between the late 16th and the first half of the 17th centuries. The strongest possibility points to Karel van Mallery (or Charles de Mallery, 1571–c. 1635), a prolific engraver and printer who regularly worked with compositions by Maarten de Vos and the Galle workshop, and whose abbreviated signatures often employ the formula "C. v. Mallery" or "C. v. M. fe." (fecit).

Engraving (burin engraving) possibly combined with etching for the contour lines and textured backgrounds of the sky. The modeling of the body and the depth of the shadows in the landscape are achieved through a dense network of cross-hatching.
