CHRISTOPF NIESCHL. Grabado del Siglo XVII

CHRISTOPF NIESCHL
17th Century engraving

CHRISTOPF NIESCHL ( 1566 - 1621 )

Christoph Nietzsche was a Lutheran theologian and deacon, parish priest of the Augsburg Hospital.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY :

Vestimenta:

Attire:

He is depicted wearing a traditional pleated ruff collar (a Millstone collar or Kröse) and dark clerical robes (Schaube), typical ecclesiastical dress for high-ranking Lutheran clergy in Southern Germany during the late 16th and 17th centuries.

The Book and Crucifix:

He holds a book inscribed with "Verbum Crucis" (The Word of the Cross), referencing 1 Corinthians 1:18 ("For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God"). A small crucifix physically stands upon the Bible, emphasizing Christ-centric Lutheran theology (Theologia Crucis).

The Monogram (Top Left)

The initials L.K.S. are clearly engraved in the upper left corner.

This likely Lucas Kilian Sculp.

Burin Work (Line Engraving)
The entire image is composed of deliberate, clean lines cut directly into a copper plate using a hardened steel tool called a burin (or graver).
Look closely at the deep black lines of the clerical robes—the engraver varies the depth and width of the cuts to control how much ink the groove holds, giving the fabric its weight and texture.
The crisp text at the bottom and top right was also hand-engraved backwards into the plate so it would print correctly on the paper.
Because engraving only produces solid lines (no gray ink), gradients and shadows must be optical illusions. Kilian achieved the dark, dense background using a technique called cross-hatching—layering intersecting networks of parallel lines at precise angles. The closer and tighter the grid of lines, the darker the shadow appears to the eye.

Stippling and Dotting (Flesh Tones)
If you examine the face, particularly the cheeks, forehead, and around the eyes, you will notice the technique shifts from long lines to tiny flicks, short dashes, and minute dots (stippling). This allowed the engraver to capture the delicate, organic texture of human skin and the soft transition of light across the pastor's features, contrasting sharply with the geometric stiffness of the background.

Intaglio Printing
Once the plate was fully carved, ink was rolled over the surface and then carefully wiped away, leaving ink only inside the recessed grooves. Damp paper was placed over the plate and run through a high-pressure rolling press. The pressure forced the paper into the grooves to lift the ink, which is why original prints like this have a slight, distinct three-dimensional texture (the ink sits in raised ridges on the paper).
