Equestrian Typology:
The figure is depicted riding a rearing horse or in a levade maneuver, imitating the tradition of 17th-century Baroque equestrian portraits (such as those by Stefano della Bella or Claude Deruet, on which this 19th-century lithographic model is based). Military-Chivalric Attire and Attributes: He wears a male military uniform or an adapted version in the French Baroque style, with a buttoned coat, wide leather gloves, and a wide-brimmed hat adorned with feathers (a walona hat). In his left hand, he holds the horse's bridle and a riding crop; at his side hangs a rapier with a looped hilt, long cords, and ceremonial tassels. Background:
Rocky terrain in the foreground with soft lines on the horizon suggesting a rural or sketched battle scene. Heraldry:
In the center of the lower margin, under the scene, there is a coat of arms surmounted by a helmet in profile and a crest in the shape of an eagle or phoenix, corresponding to the family coat of arms of Ernecourt / Saint-Balmont (three fleurs-de-lis or bezants on bands).
