 BALTHASAR MARRADAS ET VIQUE  ( Valencia 1560 - Praga 1638 ) 

Balthasar Marradas fué un noble Valenciano y militar Español, Caballero de la orden de Malta ,del Hospital y del Sacro Imperio, Mariscal de los ejercitos imperiales de los Habsburgo, gobernador de Bohemia, conde Imperial y de Bosiz, señor de Vodiana, Sdristain y Fraumberg, Consejero Imperial entre otros títulos nobiliarios y distinciones militares.

Balthasar Marradas was a Velencian nobleman and Spanish military, knight of The Order of Malta, of The Hospital ang of The Sacred Empire, Marshal of The Imparial armies of the Habsburgs, governor of Bohemia, Count Imperial and of Bosiz, Lord of Vodiana, Sdristain and Fraumberg , Imperial Councillor among other noble titles and military distinctions.

ICONOGRAFIA / ICONOGRAPHY :

Bastón de comandante (Basto de Mando): Sujetado firmemente en su mano izquierda, este bastón es el símbolo universal de alto rango y autoridad suprema en el retrato militar barroco, que denota su estatus de Mariscal de Campo Imperial (Feldmarschall) y Coronel Estipendiario (Colonel Stipendiarius).

Arnés (Coraza): Pesada coraza de acero pulido superpuesta sobre un jubón texturizado. Representa su trayectoria militar durante la Guerra de los Treinta Años y su defensa del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico y los intereses católicos de los Habsburgo.

Gorguera (Cuello de encaje intrincado): El suntuoso encaje, que contrasta directamente con la oscura coraza de acero, denota nobleza, refinamiento cortesano y alta posición social (Chamberlain del Emperador/Rey).

Cruz de Malta de ocho puntas:

La lucía como una joya o insignia prominente alrededor del cuello, suspendida de una elaborada cadena.
Se destacaba aún más detrás del escudo de armas en la parte inferior central.
Indicaba su rango de Caballero (Eques) y Comendador (Commendator) de la Orden Militar de San Juan de Jerusalén (Melitensis), denotando tanto su devoción religiosa como su deber militar caballeresco.

Escudo de la familia Marradas: Escudo cuartelado con barras horizontales, un motivo de castillo/torre y cuarteles de la nobleza local, colocados directamente sobre la Cruz de Malta para fusionar el linaje con el estatus caballeresco.

Iconografía: Un águila que se eleva hacia el cielo/sol portando símbolos militares (lanzas, estandartes o rayos) sobre un paisaje abierto.
Simbolismo: Representa la lealtad imperial, la elevada ambición, la vigilancia y la supremacía militar bajo el motivo del águila imperial de los Habsburgo.

Emblema de la esquina superior derecha (Impresa)
Iconografía: Una esfera armilar o globo celeste sobre un horizonte abierto, rodeada por una banda con el lema (PORTA LUZ...).
Simbolismo: Servicio universal en todo el Imperio (España, Italia, Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico, Bohemia) y guía firme en los asuntos de Estado.

Comparación con Hércules (Anfitrioniades): El epigrama latino compara explícitamente el valor y la inteligencia de Marradas con los de Hércules (a quien se refiere el patronímico Anfitrioniades).
Lema Haud Inferiora Sequi: («No persiga metas menores» / «En pos de hazañas sin igual»): un clásico motivo heroico que afirma que sus proezas militares en Bohemia y Alemania rivalizan con las legendarias hazañas de la antigüedad.

Commander’s Baton (Basto de Mando): Held firmly in his left hand, this baton is the universal symbol of high rank and supreme authority in Baroque military portraiture, signifying his status as Imperial Field Marshal (Feldmarschall) and Stipendiary Colonel (Colonel Stipendiarius).

Plate Armor (Arnés / Coraza): Heavy, polished steel cuirass layered over a textured doublet. It represents his lifelong martial role in the Thirty Years' War and his defending of the Holy Roman Empire and Catholic Habsburg interests.

Intricate Lace Collar (Ruff / Gorguera): The lavish lace pattern directly contrasting the dark steel plate signifies noble status, elite courtly refinement, and high social standing (Chamberlain to the Emperor/King).

Eight-Pointed Maltese Cross (Cruz de Malta):

Worn as a prominent jewel/insignia around his neck, suspended from an elaborate chain.
Re-emphasized behind the coat of arms at the bottom center.
Indicates his rank as a Knight (Eques) and Commander (Commendator) of the Military Order of Saint John of Jerusalem (Melitensis), denoting both religious devotion and chivalric military duty.

Marradas Family Crest: Quartered shield containing horizontal bars, a castle/tower motif, and local nobility quarterings, placed directly over the Maltese Cross to merge lineage with chivalric status.

Iconography: An eagle soaring toward the sky/sun carrying military symbols (spears, banners, or thunderbolts) above an open landscape.

 Symbolism: Represents Imperial loyalty, lofty ambition, vigilance, and martial supremacy under the Habsburg imperial eagle motif.

Upper Right Corner Emblem (Impresa)

Iconography: An armillary sphere or celestial globe set above an open horizon, enclosed within a motto band (PORTA LUZ...).
Symbolism: Universal service across the Empire (Spain, Italy, Holy Roman Empire, Bohemia) and steadfast guidance amidst state affairs.

Hercules Comparison (Amphitryoniades): The Latin epigram explicitly compares Marradas’ courage and mind to Hercules (referred to by the patronymic Amphitryoniades).
Motto Haud Inferiora Sequi: ("Following no lesser goals" / "In pursuit of no inferior deeds")—a classic heroic motif asserting that his military feats in Bohemia and Germany rival the legendary labors of antiquity.

Fuertemente influenciada por el manierismo nórdico y el estilo de grabado barroco temprano, popularizados en Praga por maestros como Aegidius Sadeler II (1570-1629) y Lucas Kilian (1579-1637).
Características principales de esta escuela:
* Técnica de buril precisa y limpia con profundo contraste en armaduras y texturas.

* Enmarcado del retratado dentro de un medallón ovalado formal con trampantojo.

* Integración de inscripciones lapidarias clásicas, escudos de armas familiares en la parte inferior e impresiones o emblemas alegóricos en las esquinas superiores.

* Uso de versos elegíacos en latín en la base para enmarcar el tema militar dentro de marcos clásicos humanísticos y heroicos (por ejemplo, alusiones hercúleas).
