Jean Baptiste Colbert fue uno de los principales ministros de Luis XIV, fue ministro de finanzas a partir de 1665, secretario del rey y de la marina hasta su muerte acaecida en 1683.

Jean Baptiste Colbert was one of Louis XIV's principal ministers. He served as Minister of Finance from 1665 and as Secretary to the King and the Navy until his death in 1683.

Jean Baptiste Colbert aparece representado de tres cuartos, girado hacia la izquierda, en un busto inscrito en un marco ovalado sutilmente moldurado. Viste un sobrio atuendo civil oscuro sobre el cual destaca una magnífica y detallada valona o cuello de encaje plano, resuelto con una minuciosidad técnica impecable en las tramas del burin para emular la transparencia y el calado del tejido.

Jean Baptiste Colbert is depicted in three-quarter view, turned to the left, in a bust set within a subtly molded oval frame. He wears a sober, dark civilian outfit, over which stands out a magnificent and detailed ruffle or flat lace collar, executed with impeccable technical precision in the burin weave to emulate the transparency and openwork of the fabric.

Influencia de los grandes maestros: Jacques Lubin estuvo muy influenciado por los principales grabadores de retratos franceses del reinado de Luis XIV, en particular Robert Nanteuil y Claude Mellan. Nanteuil popularizó este estilo compositivo: un busto realista enmarcado por un óvalo formal que imita la piedra, con un escudo de armas y un pedestal arquitectónico con una inscripción grabada en la parte inferior.

Influence of the Great Masters: Jacques Lubin was heavily influenced by the dominant French portrait engravers of the reign of Louis XIV, particularly Robert Nanteuil and Claude Mellan. Nanteuil popularized this exact compositional standard: a life-like bust framed by a formal stone-like oval, anchored below by a coat of arms and a architectural pedestal bearing an engraved inscription.

Papel de trapo hecho a mano, compuesto de fibras de cáñamo y lino prensadas sobre moldes de alambre. Al trasluz, muestra líneas distintivas (patrón de cuadrícula) y, ocasionalmente, líneas de cadena o marcas de agua.

Handmade rag paper composed of hemp and linen fibers pressed onto wire moulds. Shows distinctive laid lines (grid pattern) and occasionally chain lines or watermarks when held to light.

HERÁLDICA / HERADRY:

En la parte inferior central, interrumpiendo la moldura del marco oval, se integra un escudo de armas coronado perteneciente a la familia Colbert. En el campo del escudo se distingue perfectamente su pieza parlante característica: el unicornio o el reptil/serpiente (un coluber en latín, juego de palabras con el apellido Colbert) flanqueado por soportes heráldicos.

In the lower center, interrupting the oval frame's molding, is a crowned coat of arms belonging to the Colbert family. Within the shield, its characteristic canting charge is clearly visible: the unicorn or reptile/serpent (a coluber in Latin, a play on words with the surname Colbert) flanked by heraldic supporters.

Esta estampa fue realizada originalmente para ilustrar la monumental obra biográfica de Charles Perrault, Les Hommes illustres qui ont paru en France pendant ce siècle, publicada en París por Antoine Dezallier entre 1696 y 1700.
La serie de retratos encargada a Lubin para esta edición se caracteriza precisamente por esta suntuosa estructura: el personaje enmarcado en un óvalo recortado, dispuesto sobre un zócalo o repisa de líneas verticales donde se inscribe el nombre del ilustre en caligrafía cursiva, coronando el conjunto con el escudo de armas heráldico en la parte inferior central del marco.

This print was originally created to illustrate Charles Perrault's monumental biographical work, *Les Hommes illustres qui ont paru en France pendant ce siècle*, published in Paris by Antoine Dezallier between 1696 and 1700. The series of portraits commissioned from Lubin for this edition is characterized precisely by this sumptuous structure: the subject framed in a cut-out oval, placed on a plinth or shelf of vertical lines where the illustrious figure's name is inscribed in cursive calligraphy, the whole crowned with a heraldic coat of arms in the lower center of the frame.
