Henry Philippe Chauvelin fue un clérigo de Notre - Dame de París defensor del Jansenismo y consejero del Parlamento de Francia.
Henry Philippe Chauvelin was a clergyman of Notre-Dame de Paris, defender of Jansenism and advisor to the Parliament of France.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHY :
El retrato está realizado en el estilo ilustrativo clásico francés de mediados del siglo XVIII, popularizado por Charles-Nicolas Cochin. El retratado aparece de tres cuartos hacia la derecha, mirando al frente, enmarcado en un marco ovalado con trampantojo.
El marco está suspendido en la parte superior por un lazo decorativo (nœud), un motivo frecuente en los retratos de Luis XV. El retratado viste el alzacuellos (rabat) y las togas judiciales propias de su cargo como Consejero de la Gran Cámara del Parlamento de París.

The portrait is executed in the classic mid-18th-century French illustrative style popularized by Charles-Nicolas Cochin. The sitter is depicted three-quarter view to the right, looking forward, enclosed within a molded trompe-l'œil oval frame.


The frame is suspended by a decorative ribbon bow (nœud) at the top, a frequent motif in Louis XV portrait prints. The subject wears the ecclesiastical/parliamentary collar (rabat) and judicial robes appropriate to his office as Conseiller of the Grande Chambre of the Parliament of Paris.

Guillaume Fillastre fue un Humanista, Geógrafo y Cardenal,  mostro cierta simpatía por Benedicto XIII el Papa Luna, participó en el concilio de Pisa de 1409 y en concilio de Constanza ( 1414 - 1418 ), fue ratificado en su cargo por el Papa Martin V , Fue obispo de Mans.

 Guillaume Fillastre was a Humanist, Geographer and Cardinal, showed some sympathy for Benedict XIII Pope Luna, participated in the Council of Pisa in 1409 and in the Council of Constance ( 1414 - 1418 ), was ratified by Pope Martin V, was bishop of mans.

ICONOGRAFIA / ICONOGRAPHY :

Tipología del retrato:
El retratado aparece de medio cuerpo dentro de un marco ovalado, enmarcado a su vez en una placa rectangular arquitectónica de mayor tamaño. Se le representa en una postura piadosa y contemplativa, con las manos juntas en oración, la mirada elevada hacia una luz celestial y un breviario abierto frente a él.

Heráldica y atributos:
En la parte inferior central destaca su escudo de armas, que representa una cabeza de ciervo (un massacre de cerf / a chantrain).

El escudo está rematado por un galero (el sombrero tradicional de ala ancha que usan los cardenales) con cordones, aunque las borlas están cuidadosamente integradas en el diseño de volutas.

Ornamentación del marco:
El marco exhibe un trabajo clásico de cartelas barrocas francesas de mediados a finales del siglo XVII, con volutas pesadas y simétricas, elementos estilizados de delfines/monstruos marinos en las esquinas superiores y un profundo sombreado tonal para dar a los elementos arquitectónicos una presencia escultórica y tridimensional.

  • The sitter is shown half-length inside an oval frame, set within a larger architectural rectangular plate. He is rendered in a pious, contemplative orant posture—hands clasped in prayer, eyes raised toward a heavenly light source, with an open devotional book or breviary before him.


  • Heraldry & Attributes:

    • The shield is surmounted by a galero (the traditional wide-brimmed hat worn by cardinals) with cords, though the tassels are tucked neatly into the scrollwork design here.


  • Positioned prominently at the bottom center is his coat of arms, featuring a stag's head (un massacre de cerf / a chantrain).


  • Frame Ornamentation:

  • The framing exhibits classic mid-to-late 17th-century French Baroque cartouche work, featuring heavy, symmetrical volutes, stylized dolphin/sea-monster elements at the upper corners, and deep tonal cross-hatching to give the architectural elements a sculptural, three-dimensional presence.
