SAN JORGE. 18th century engraving
The engraving utilizes a classic late-Baroque composition characterized by dynamic diagonal lines and high-contrast drapery:
The Martyr-Saint:
Saint George is depicted as a Roman soldier with an idealized, youthful countenance, wearing a crested helmet and a breastplate adorned with a prominent cross. His cape flows backward to emphasize forward momentum.
The Steed:
The horse is shown in a dynamic levade or rearing posture, standard for equestrian victory portraits of the era.
The Dragon:
Positioned at the base, pinned to the earth by Saint George’s lance. The rendering shows a scaly, serpentine body with mammalian paws, typical of counter-reformation hagiographical imagery symbolizing the triumph of Faith over evil/heresy.
The Princess:
In the background on the right, Cleodolinda is seen fleeing or praying near a tree, establishing the narrative setting of the Golden Legend.
The Cartouche:
The title
S. JORGE MARTIRis framed by a heavily stylized, symmetrical Baroque rocaille cartouche at the bottom center of the visual field, just above the plate margin.
