Nicolás de L'Hospital belonged to an influential noble family with a strong military tradition. He pursued a brilliant military career and served the French Crown closely during the reigns of Henry IV and Louis XIII. His most famous historical episode took place on April 24, 1617. Acting on the direct orders of King Louis XIII—who sought to free himself from the tutelage and abusive influence of the Queen Mother, Marie de' Medici, and her favorite—the then-Baron de Vitry intercepted Concino Concini in the courtyard of the Louvre Palace. During the confrontation and an alleged attempt to resist, Concini was shot dead by Vitry's men. As an immediate reward for this decisive action, which consolidated Louis XIII's personal power, the monarch elevated him to the rank of Marshal of France in May 1617, as detailed in the handwritten notes accompanying the engraving. He was subsequently appointed governor of the Provence region in 1631. However, due to abuses of power and friction with the centralizing policies of the powerful Cardinal Richelieu, he fell out of favor and was briefly imprisoned in the Bastille. Following the deaths of Richelieu and King Louis XIII himself, he regained his freedom and honors. He died at his estate in Nandy on September 28, 1644 (an event recorded in contemporary chronicles in an unusual manner, or attributed to complications arising from a hunting accident, as indicated by the handwritten note at the bottom of the engraving).

The subject's bust is set within an oval frame—simulating stone or metal—a convention widely used in Baroque printmaking to lend solemnity and monumentality to the effigy, emulating classical cameos or reliefs. The marshal wears ornate plate armor decorated with geometric engravings and horizontal bands, visible on his left shoulder and arm. This underscores his status as a man of arms and his high military rank.

He prominently wears a sash or band of taffeta across his chest, a symbol of high military rank and chivalric distinction. His neck is adorned with a voluminous lace ruff featuring floral and geometric motifs (a *fraise* or an evolved flat lace collar), characteristic of European aristocratic fashion in the early to mid-17th century. His hair is styled in long, carefully groomed curls, typical of the courtly aesthetic of the Louis XIII era. A heavy, tasseled curtain hangs from the upper corner—a theatrical Baroque device that lends a sense of dramatic dignity and noble status to the sitter.
