ENRIQUE DE LORENA, Conde de Harcourt ( 1601 - 1666 )

Enrique de Lorena fue un noble y militar francés participó en la guerra de los treinta años donde se ditinguiṕ por su valor y destreza, entre 1645 y 1647 fue virrey de Cataluña en nombre del Rey de Francia, se enfrento al Cardenal Mazarino y posteriormente se retiró a Alsacia donde falleciṕ el 25 de Julio de 1666.

Enrique de Lorena was a French nobleman and military officer who participated in the Thirty Years' War, where he distinguished himself for his courage and skill. Between 1645 and 1647, he was viceroy of Catalonia on behalf of the King of France. He confronted Cardinal Mazarin and later retired to Alsace, where he died on July 25, 1666.

El personaje aparece representado en un busto de tres cuartos hacia la derecha, inscrito dentro de un marco oval que descansa sobre un pedestal de piedra tallada. Luce una voluminosa peluca de la época, armadura de placas, un gran cuello de encaje (rabat) y la cruz de la Orden del Espíritu Santo sobre el pecho.

Portrait of Henri de Lorraine, Count of Harcourt. The subject is depicted in a three-quarter bust facing right, set within an oval frame resting on a carved stone pedestal. He wears a voluminous wig of the period, plate armor, a large lace collar (rabat), and the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit on his chest.

Jean Dunz fue un pintor del barroco francés especializado en bodegones y retratos.

ICONOGRAFÍA / ICONOGRAPHYC:

Retrato central:

Dünz aparece de perfil de tres cuartos, girado hacia la derecha y mirando al espectador. Su imagen está enmarcada en un óvalo compuesto enteramente por una densa guirnalda de laurel, símbolo de mérito artístico y fama perdurable. El atributo izquierdo (Naturaleza muerta y drama):

A la izquierda, una pesada cortina, similar a la de un teatro, se abre para revelar una naturaleza muerta meticulosamente representada de plantas o flores en una cesta rústica tejida. Esta es una clara alusión alegórica a la habilidad de Dünz como pintor de naturalezas muertas.

El atributo derecho (El jardín formal):

A la derecha, un cartucho ovalado reproduce el lado izquierdo, mostrando una composición floral sobre un fondo arquitectónico que representa un jardín formal con esferas de topiaria y pilares de piedra clásicos. Esto evoca el enfoque estructurado y académico de la composición y los elementos paisajísticos propios de su época.

El soporte:

El marco ovalado se asienta sobre un pesado pedestal o balaustrada de piedra adornado con una moldura clásica de volutas onduladas o vitruvianas a lo largo de la tira inferior, que da solidez a la composición.

Central Portrait:
Dünz is shown in three-quarter profile turned to the right, looking back toward the viewer. The likeness is enclosed within an oval frame entirely composed of a dense laurel garland, signifying artistic merit and enduring fame.

The Left Attribute (Still Life & Drama):
To the left, a heavy theater-like curtain is drawn back to reveal a meticulously rendered still life of plants or flowers in a rustic woven basket. This is a direct allegorical nod to Dünz’s skill as a Stilleben (still-life) painter.

The Right Attribute (The Formal Garden):
To the right, an oval cartouche mirrors the left side, displaying an arrangement of flora against an architectural background featuring a formal garden with topiary spheres and classical stone pillars. This evokes the structured, academic approach to composition and landscape elements of his era.

The Support:
The entire oval frame rests upon a heavy stone plinth or balustrade adorned with a classicized wave-scroll or Vitruvian scroll molding along the lower molding strip, anchoring the composition.
