Hugo Grotius is depicted within an oval medallion adorned with laurel leaves (a symbol of glory and scholarship), wearing the characteristic pleated ruff of the early 17th century and dark, buttoned attire. At the top of the frame, two trumpets entwined with foliage cross one another. His name in Latin—"HVCO GROTIVS" (Hugo Grotius)—is clearly inscribed on the architectural plinth or pedestal below. Arranged around the bust are various symbolic objects relating to his work and thought: On the left, an inkwell, quills, books, and a pair of scales (alluding to justice, jurisprudence, and international law—fields in which he was a pioneer with works such as *De jure belli ac pacis*). On the right, a caduceus (a symbol of peace, diplomacy, and commerce) resting upon a sword.
