JOHANNES FABRICIUS. Grabado del Siglo XVII

JOHANNES FABRICIUS  ( 1587 - 1616 )

Johannes Fabricius was the eldest son of the Lutheran pastor and astronomer David Fabricius. He studied medicine and the humanities at the universities of Helmstedt, Wittenberg, and Leiden, graduating from the latter. Upon returning from the Netherlands, he brought back telescopes that he began using alongside his father to observe the Sun. Through these indirect observations—projecting the image to avoid damaging their eyesight—they became the first to notice the existence of sunspots and to deduce the Sun's rotation on its own axis. In the autumn of 1611, he published his famous treatise *De Maculis in Sole Observatis, et apparente earum cum Sole conversione* in Wittenberg. This work represented the first published account of sunspots, appearing shortly before the publications of Galileo Galilei and Christoph Scheiner on the same phenomenon. After completing his studies and making his pioneering contribution to science, he practiced medicine briefly. He died prematurely in March 1616, at the early age of twenty-nine, in Marienhafe, Germany.

He wears a toga, or dark robe, typical of academics, university professors, or religious ministers of the period, along with a pleated ruff. This type of starched collar was distinctive of the upper classes and learned circles in Northern Europe (the Netherlands and Germany).

The figure holds a small book with an intricate binding. In the iconography of scholarly portraits, the book represents the wisdom, doctrinal authority, scientific contributions, or literary/doctrinal output of the sitter.

The features show a very marked individuality (high forehead, prominent cheekbones, and a period-style trimmed beard and mustache), following the tradition of European portrait engravings intended for book covers.

PERIODO / PERIOD :

The historical period to which this engraving belongs is the early 17th century (specifically the era of the early Baroque or the transition between Renaissance Humanism and the onset of the Scientific Revolution), set within the cultural and printing context of the Holy Roman Empire and Northern Europe between 1610 and the 1620s.
CONTEXTO / CONTEXT:

The context of this engraving lies at the dawn of the 17th century (around 1611), a pivotal moment of cultural and scientific transition in Northern Europe. It coincides with the introduction of the telescope into the empirical study of the heavens, a time when Johannes Fabricius and his father David conducted pioneering observations of sunspots and deduced the Sun's rotation on its own axis. Print workshops in Wittenberg and German-speaking regions employed such intaglio portraits to illustrate title pages, short scientific treatises, or biographical collections of illustrious men (*icones*), thereby cementing the image of the author and humanist scholar.

Cornelius de Coninck was a key figure in the administration of the Netherlands during the 16th century and was closely linked to the early days of the University. Although exact dates vary slightly across local genealogical and historical sources from Leiden, contemporary records place his life roughly between 1515 and 1582. He belonged to a prominent family in the Netherlands—often associated with the minor nobility or the urban patriciate of Holland—with ties to the Bloys area. He held significant political and administrative posts, serving as a councilor and mayor (*burgemeester*) of Leiden during a period of profound political and religious transformation marked by the Eighty Years' War and the revolt of the United Provinces against the Spanish Monarchy. Leiden University was founded in 1575 by William of Orange following the famous Siege of Leiden. Coninck was a member of the first select group of curators (administrators and patrons) charged with overseeing the governance, funding, faculty selection, and autonomy of the newly created academic institution—the first university of the United Provinces.
