ERNESTO DE AUSTRIA ( 1553 - 1595 )
Ernésto de Austria , Archiduque de Austria y Gobernador de los Paises Bajos Españoles, Príncipe de Bohemia y Hungría, Caballero del Toisón de Oro entre otras distinciones, fue educado en la corte de Felipe II, lidero la contrareforma en el archiducado de Austria, en 1590 fue nombrado gobernador de los Ducados de Estíria, Caríntia y Carniola, en 1594 Felipe II de España lo nombró Gobernador de los Paises Bajos Españoles, falleció en Bruselas el 12 de Febrero de 1595 a la edad de 42 años.
Ernest of Austria, Archduke of Austria and Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, Prince of Bohemia and Hungary, Knight of the Golden Fleece among other distinctions, was educated at the court of Philip II, led the counter-reformation in the Archduchy of Austria, in 1590 was appointed governor of the Duchies of Styria, Carinthia and Carniola, in 1594 Philip II of Spain appointed him Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, died in Brussels on February 12, 1595 at the age of 42 years.

El archiduque viste ropa de corte de la época con una prominente lechuguilla (gorguera) al cuello. En su cabeza luce una elaborada gorra o tocado enjoyado. Sobre el pecho cuelga de una cadena la venera de la Orden del Toisón de Oro, de la cual era caballero.
Attire and Attributes:
The archduke wears court dress of the period with a prominent ruff around his neck. On his head he wears an elaborate jeweled cap or headdress. Hanging on his chest from a chain is the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece, of which he was a knight.

En las esquinas inferiores exteriores del óvalo, se aprecian pequeñas iniciales o marcas de plancha talladas a buril (a la izquierda parece intuirse una G o un entrelazado, y a la derecha una f. de fecit). Estas marcas suelen ser cruciales para atribuir la estampa exacta a un grabador de la escuela flamenca o alemana de la época, como los talleres de los hermanos Wierix o de Crispijn de Passe el Viejo, quienes realizaron series formalmente idénticas a esta para las cronologías de gobernantes europeos.
In the lower outer corners of the oval, small initials or plate marks carved with a burin can be seen (on the left, a G or an interlacing pattern seems to be discernible, and on the right, an f. from fecit). These marks are often crucial for attributing the exact print to an engraver of the Flemish or German school of the period, such as the workshops of the Wierix brothers or Crispijn de Passe the Elder, who produced series formally identical to this one for the chronologies of European rulers.
