ICONOGRAFIA / ICONOGRAPHY
The iconography of Joan of France (Saint Joan of Valois) distinctively combines her status as a royal princess and queen with her mystical and monastic vocation, visually reflecting her transition from the courtly world to sainthood.
She is typically depicted wearing the dark habit and the characteristic headdress or veil of the Annunciades (the Order of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which she herself founded in Bourges in 1502). This element underscores her profound humility and renunciation of worldly honors following the annulment of her marriage.
Despite her religious calling, she often wears an open or closed crown adorned with the traditional fleurs-de-lis of the French monarchy. This attribute unmistakably recalls her lineage as the daughter of Louis XI and the first wife of Louis XII, legitimizing her dynastic heritage.
