Leopold I of Habsburg was Holy Roman Emperor (1658–1705) and King of Hungary and Bohemia; he was the son of Emperor Ferdinand III and his first wife, Infanta Maria Anna of Spain (daughter of Philip III). Because his older brother Ferdinand was initially destined to succeed to the throne, Leopold received an extensive ecclesiastical education under the tutelage of the Jesuits; this shaped his devout and cautious character, as well as his staunch defense of the Counter-Reformation. Following his brother's sudden death in 1654, he became the dynastic heir and assumed the imperial crowns in 1658. His long reign of nearly 47 years was dominated by two fundamental geopolitical fronts: The Ottoman threat in the East: He successfully led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire, most notably during the defense of Vienna in 1683 and the subsequent military campaigns of Prince Eugene of Savoy, which culminated in the Treaty of Karlowitz (1699) and the liberation of much of Hungary. Rivalry with France: He maintained constant opposition to the expansionist ambitions of Louis XIV of France, participating in various European leagues and laying the groundwork for the subsequent War of the Spanish Succession by asserting his dynasty's claims to the Spanish throne. Although he was in delicate health during his youth and had little inclination for direct military life, he demonstrated great political tenacity. He married three times (his first wife being the Spanish Infanta Margaret Theresa of Austria). He was a notable patron of the arts and a musical composer, helping to establish Vienna as a major European cultural center. He died in 1705, leaving the empire to his eldest son, Joseph I.
The emperor is depicted within an oval medallion—a format typical of the era for portraits of dignitaries and notable figures in printed publications. This composition focused attention on the attributes of power and the distinctive facial features of the House of Habsburg. He wears burnished steel armor featuring articulated pauldrons and engraved ornamental details—an iconographic device frequently used to underscore the *Imperator’s* status as the supreme defender of Christendom and leader of the Germanic armies against rival powers and the Ottoman threat. His long, abundant hair, styled in defined curls, strictly reflects the aesthetic fashion of the second half of the 17th century—a style adopted by major European courts in imitation of the French court of Louis XIV. The cartouche at the bottom features the crowned double-headed eagle, the quintessential imperial symbol of the Holy Roman Empire. Its two heads face east and west, representing universal dominion, secular power, and the legacy of ancient Roman empires; the emblem is flanked by inscriptions in Old German detailing place names and titles.
