El retrato se inscribe en un óvalo enmarcado por filetes concéntricos, un recurso estilístico clásico que Cook utilizó de manera sistemática para homogeneizar los retratos de formato exento en las publicaciones de formato octavo o cuarto de Longman.
Destaca el contraste entre la elaborada textura de la peluca barroca y el drapeado de la casaca, resueltos mediante un entramado denso de líneas cruzadas (cross-hatching), limpio pero adaptado a la producción comercial de libreros de la época.
