Juventud y regencia

Hijo de Luis XI y Carlota de Saboya. Al acceder al trono con solo 13 años tras la muerte de su padre en 1483, su hermana mayor, Ana de Francia (Ana de Beaujeu), y el esposo de esta, Pedro de Beaujeu, ejercieron la regencia. Durante este periodo sofocaron la rebelión de la alta nobleza conocida como la Guerra Loca (1485-1488), liderada por el duque de Orléans (futuro Luis XII).

Matrimonio y anulación del Ducado de Bretaña

En 1491, Carlos VIII se casó con Ana de Bretaña, un enlace de enorme trascendencia política que inició el proceso de incorporación definitiva del independiente Ducado de Bretaña a la corona francesa. Para llevar a cabo este matrimonio, hubo de anularse el compromiso previo de Carlos con Margarita de Austria.

Las Guerras de Italia (1494–1498)

Reclamando los derechos hereditarios de la casa de Anjou sobre el Reino de Nápoles, Carlos VIII inició la Primera Guerra de Italia en 1494.

Muerte y sucesión
Murió de forma prematura a los 27 años tras sufrir un traumatismo craneoencefálico al golpearse accidentalmente la cabeza con el dintel de una puerta en el castillo de Amboise mientras iba a presenciar un partido de jeu de paume. Dado que todos los hijos nacidos de su matrimonio con Ana de Bretaña murieron a temprana edad, la corona pasó a su primo, el duque de Orléans, quien reinó como Luis XII.

Youth and Regency Son of Louis XI and Charlotte of Savoy. Upon ascending the throne at only 13 years old after his father's death in 1483, his older sister, Anne of France (Anne de Beaujeu), and her husband, Pierre de Beaujeu, served as regent. During this period, they suppressed the rebellion of the high nobility known as the Mad War (1485-1488), led by the Duke of Orléans (the future Louis XII). Marriage and Annulment of the Duchy of Brittany In 1491, Charles VIII married Anne of Brittany, a union of enormous political significance that initiated the process of the definitive incorporation of the independent Duchy of Brittany into the French crown. To carry out this marriage, Charles's previous engagement to Margaret of Austria had to be annulled. The Italian Wars (1494–1498) Claiming the hereditary rights of the House of Anjou to the Kingdom of Naples, Charles VIII began the First Italian War in 1494.

Death and Succession He died prematurely at the age of 27 after suffering a head injury when he accidentally hit his head on a door lintel at the Château d'Amboise while on his way to watch a game of jeu de paume. Since all the children born to his marriage to Anne of Brittany died young, the crown passed to his cousin, the Duke of Orléans, who reigned as Louis XII.
